No shows for A meets?

Anonymous
It is extraordinarily rare for a kid to o show an a meet. I would definitely talk to parents. Depending on reason I would either keep them out of lineup the next meet or confirm attendance Friday night, and again sat morning
Anonymous
This is very rare on our team. We are D1 though. People take it super seriously (which has its downsides). Also, we (the parents) have to affirm positively the kid is going. No response to the meet list would get a call from the team rep.

If a kid is on a team where they have taken a spot someone else could fill, this is super crappy to do.

Was it someone who never goes to A meets? Our rep just sends out the list, and if a kid is usually not on it I can see a parent easily missing that they were picked. It may be worthwhile on sending an individual email if it’s a child’s first A meet and has never been picked before.

We were out of town and it looked like everyone who was in town added a bunch of time because they were probably all exhausted from staying up late the night before. I’m sure some will say oh it’s great because it gives some kids a chance to swim who don’t normally get to. If the leagues around here weren’t set up to exclude so many kids from Sat meets in the first place that wouldn’t be an issue. It makes a lot more sense to have an IM meet or some other special fun opt-in meet on the July 4 weekend so people who enjoy going to a meet can do that, while others can enjoy their holiday weekend. That’s what my league did growing up and it worked for everyone.

Agree w/ this approach. A lot of families are still out for today’s B meet

It’s hard to say what is right. On the one hand don’t punish the kid if it wasn’t their fault but as other posters say the rep/coach needs to talk to the parents and let them know it’s not cool. If they get it then end of discussion. Especially if they are not usual a meet swimmers it may just have not been on their radar.

OP here - it was kids who have been in a few A meets. The parents knew they were in it and I think just couldn't make the early wake up the day after the fourth.

Downvote.

1. People don’t leave Washington DC for July 4th, they come to Washington DC for July 4.

2. It’s the summer, people take vacations. That’s OK. If you are extremely vested in summer swim, you will plan to vacation in August, otherwise, you’ll miss a meet, whether it’s the week of July 4, or another week. It’s not a big deal either way.

Agreed! The alternative would be to either start earlier or go a week later, both of which no one wants. The summer swim season is already about as compact as it can get.

There are alternatives. People here are just stuck in their ways and think the way the local swim leagues do things is the best way, which it actually isn’t.

And no, not everyone likes being in DC on the 4th. It’s hot and crowded. The beach is a million times better.

That's not cool then. It would be first choice not to declare availability, second choice to say to coach 'hey, we can't make it" before lineup exchange (MCSL has friday at noon) , third choice to do it night before meet - emergency email, hey Larla can't make it, 4th choice to do it that AM, but no show no call is just not fair to everyone else.

A home meet the morning of July 4th is going to cause a mutiny at most pools. The NVSL should show some flexibility and move the meet to Sunday July 5th. There is absolutely no reason why this can’t happen.

Yep - July 4th meet not going to happy at our NVSL pool. There is annual cookout at noon that the membership would go nuts over being cancelled

good reason to move up meet start times. I'll take anything even 15 min, but prefer 30-45 min. earlier.
