Young Sheldon doesn’t seem appropriate for an 8-9 year old. There’s lots of references to sex, drinking, people getting knocked up, etc.

You would love what my kid watched and handled just fine with appropriate explanations when necessary.

My kids are older, but here are shows I recommend:

PBS Kids - some favorites included Cyberchase, Design Squad, Fetch! with Ruff Ruffman, Postcards from Buster,

Classic Reruns - Gilligans Island, Bewitched, Monkees, Brady Bunch, Green Acres, Carol Burnett, Mork and Mindy, Laverne and Shirley, etc.

Also:
Just Add Magic
Flight 29 Down
A Series of Unfortunate Events
Liberty’s Kids
Mythbusters
Cake decorating shows

Yeah, different families can have different concerns, making judgments about whether or not something is appropriate highly subjective. I recommend that if a parent has any concerns, they look up specific shows on Common Sense Media and/or the IMDB Parents Guide.

Anything on PBS Kids is permitted, every Friday. Unpopular opinion but, you need to be very careful with what you show girls, especially.

Read the book Cinderella Ate My Daughter - it cites so many studies about how girls are affected by media exposure even a little bit. Studies show girls are still lagging behind in STEM despite the focus and my belief is that it has to do with their media consumption.

We loved Just Add Magic!
Also Julie and the Phantoms and Gravity Falls.

Some of the animated stuff DD liked at 9 was imo pretty dark or emotionally intense - Centaurworld, Kipo, rebooted She-ra - but it's TV-7 and she loved it. Just heads-up adults may find it lands heavier.

Picking up a few from above but Fetch with Ruff Ruffman is sooo good. It’s like a game show for kids.
Also myth busters is phenomenal. I wish they still made that or would reboot it.

Mine also likes at that age Top Chef Junior …. I don’t know if there’s something similar on now, but a competition show with slightly older kids is often atttractove at that age. They all seem to watch dance moms for this reason but I really dislike that … the top chef Junior was focused on skills rather than looks or social cattiness.
