Here is our updated plan.

- Day 1 - Arrive in Zurich, Take train to Chur, Glacier Express to Zermatt (There is 11 and 12 pm train, which should work as our flight arrives at 6.40 am. Overnight in Zermatt (1 night)

- Day 2 - Gornergrat and/or Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, late evening train to Interlaken. Overnight in Interlaken (1 night)

- Day 3 - Visit Grindelwald - Jungfraujoch via train, late evening train to Lucerne. Overnight in Lucerne (5 nights) in a nice hotel right next to train station, gives us a single base with no luggage hassle for making day trips

Day 4-7 - Day trips from Lucerne

Day 8 - Take train from Lucerne to Zurich airport directly in the morning (return flight 12.45 pm)

I would really appreciate help in planning day by day trips we should consider in each region. Thank you in advance.

I would take a look at those “Youth Hostel” reviews for Interlaken OP. Not great.

I had a lost weekend at Ballmer’s hostel in Interlaken in 1993. Good times!

I had been thinking about basing in Interlaken, but now I'm thinking about an additional day or two in Grindelwald because it is easy enough to get over to Lauterbrunnen from there.

I haven't been shocked by the lodging or travel prices as much, but the touristy stuff is unreal. $250 per head to get up to Jungfraujoch via the gondola/cog train? Yikes.

Yes we decided to skip Jungfraujoch bc of this. It is also supposed to be very busy and crowded. We had the Bernese Oberland train pass and that includes Schilthorn for free. We put it out to our teens: paragliding or Jungfraujoch and they picked paragliding in Murren (200 chf /pp).

Do not base in Interlaken! It really doesn't have many redeeming values.

Day trips from Lucerne:
- Engelberg/Titlis
- Rigi (there is also a nice public Spa with spectacular view)
- Zurich (town, Zoo, Landesmuseum)
- steamboat tour on the Vierwaldstädtersee
- Bern (very nice old town, museums)

Based on this thread, Switzerland sounds crowded and boring.

Not OP but since I found out how much energy AI takes, I’m not using it for these frivolous questions. It’s sort of an environmental disaster.
