I agree with PP ... always wondered the same thing... |
Can anyone share titles of the first grade books your dc are bringing home? My dc told me that she is now in a group w/4 other kids (out of 26 in class). The books seem to be like the early chapter books. |
My child is getting his first book sent home tonight. I think that the book sent home varies with the group they are placed in.
We did get his notebook sent home and it shows which reading level he is in and it states what the goals are for first, second, third grade, etc. This is helpful. It doesn't tell you, though, whether your child is in the middle, ahead, etc. in your child's particular class or in MCPS in general. |
New poster here - with pre-K kids. Do all kids read by the time they start K? Mine doesn't. Should I be worried? |
The end of first grade (level 16) books are not chapter books. If your DC is getting chapter books he must be reading above grade level. |
no, not all kids read before kindergarten. don't worry. many kids learn to read in kindergarten or even 1st grade. |
OK guys i need some advice here !
My son is 6 yrs old and is in first grade this year....last year he was on a level 16-18 reading level if not higher since nothing they put in front of him he couldnt read and comprehend. In his class they have him in a reading group that I was told was the highest in his class which is a level 10. I was told well i think the other kids will catch up soon....so ok that means in the meantime they will be holding my son back on a MUCH LOWER reading level than he is at......hes reading 2nd and 3 grade books at home. Or the other option they said he can be put by his self since no one is there yet in there.....I think that is unfair as well as then he is singled out and alone with no one to help him learn.....to a 6 year old just being put by his self can make them feel bad. I think it is not in my sons best interest to be in a with a level 10 reading group just because the other kids are not where he is yet. I am getting extremely frustrated with this school. I know they can put him in a group in another class at his reading level during that time but they dont seem like they want too. Ok guys am i fighting a losing battle or do I have the right as a parent to demand he be put with kids on the same level during reading ? I got so frustrated I finally said Ok I will just come to the school at reading time and work with him myself ! I am awaiting a call back about it but I just dont see where this wasnt handled by the school since they know the childrens levels.......why am i even having to say anything is frustrating even more to me ..... any opinions or others who have dealt with anything like this ? |
I'm wondering why they send home cards with words on them. Are they teaching word memorization? Or phonemic and phonological awareness? |
The word cards probably have sight words on them. These are words that must be memorized as most of them cannot be sounded out and they are high frequency words so they occur very often in print. |
Gotcha. Like "is" and "the," for example. |
There's some good information about advocacy by parents on the Hoagies' Gifted web page. (I know you didn't mentioned the word gifted, but they're relevant sources for working kids needing acceleration.) http://www.hoagiesgifted.org/advocacy.htm We have been lucky at our MoCo school to have proactive teachers. You might consider asking if you can talk with the reading specialist at your son's school (if there is one), and then ask if he can be tested more thoroughly to find his instructional level. Clearly, his level from last year is an estimate, and it would be helpful to know where he is now. Schools have a lot of options for dealing with kids reading at different levels. They could, if the timing works, have him go to a 2nd grade reading class. They could, as they've suggested, work with him independently. It sounds like keeping him with other 1st graders isn't working, so I'd definitely keep trying to find a solution. You might also want to seek out other parents from that particular school who have dealt with similar issues. Our PTA, for example, has a contact person in charge of gifted and talented issues and would be someone I'd seek out to see if he/she had any advice. There might also be other parents who have figured out how to get the school to make accommodations for kids. More broadly, there's information at the county level. In MoCo, for example, GTA Letters is a good forum for questions like yours: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/GTAletters/ |
