8hr road trip — is it worth it?

I would do it.
Look at the map and pick places you would like to visit on the way and on the way back.

Just did this with three kids. Destination was almost 9 hours away with no traffic. Trip was fun, and I thought the drive was worth it even for just 4 nights. What would you be doing at home if you didn’t do this trip? Life is short, and kids grow so fast, so take the opportunity to travel and go on adventures!

It’s a lot of driving for the amount of time you’re spending at your destination but you can always make the trip part of the adventure. Bring fun snacks, make a great playlist and even download a good audio book you both will enjoy (I love doing this with my DH), or a Podcast series. Bring pillows for the ride, comfy socks, a pair of slip on sandals, find a fun or kitschy place to stop, and place to eat.

This. See it as an opportunity to have fun — even an adventure — together.

Does he need you to go? I would enjoy it if I wanted to go to the destination, but I think it's also fine for the family members who want to go to go and others not go. We just decided for only 2 of us to go on vacation this summer. The other 2 truly will be happier at home. I have no understanding of it, but they're not me.

My son went to undergrad 8-9 hours away and I would go once a month or so just to have dinner and then breakfast the next day and head back.

You do it because your dh wants to do it, you live him, and it would make for a nice time together if you have the right attitude.

We did a 4-night/5-day road trip to Toronto once. But we stayed somewhere different every night, exploring Niagara Falls, Pittsburgh, etc, too. Great trip & definitely worth it.

I can see not wanting to do it but I don’t get how it’s wasteful.

This sounds amazing.

When I was younger I would do road trips like this. Now the destination would need to be REALLY worthwhile for me to drive 8 hours.

It doesn’t sound like you’re that into the cabin in the woods.

If you’re lukewarm on the destination, there’s no way in hell that I would pack up the kids and deal with all of the logistics. Maybe I would have done it “just to see” in my 30’s. But in my 40’s my threshold is much higher.

Enjoy that long road trip.

I like road trips. I don't like traffic, but I enjoy the scenery. I prefer back roads, but DH is a highway guy.

He wants to - it's worth it
You go. And you go with enthusiasm

NP. We’ve done a version of this trip several times. It’s a great getaway when there is a heat wave down here.

Break it up and stay in different places so you can enjoy the drive. If he wants to do it I would try to muster the energy and maybe a little excitement as you would want him to do for an idea you were excited about.
