Different CoC worker here. The kids who ask to swim with their friends are, as PP mentioned, older. They are usually club and often also high school swimmers. They know how it works and they are in rec for the fun. Half the time they're asking to swim with a classmate at the other pool. Part of this is the fact that we're such a low division pool that there's almost no such thing as an "A meet swimmer." Basically everyone swims A meets. But our B meet league has some significantly higher division pools and it works this way across the league. |
We're NVSL, a middling division team. When my middle DS was in high school, one of his female friends on the team was one of the area's top swimmers and went on to swam D1 in college. When they were in high school they always wanted to swim next to each other in the B meets in IM. Her best time was within milliseconds of my DS' time so they were always pushing each other. Otherwise, in B meets, neither one of them had any competition. |
NVSL pool who doesn't seed B meets, no heat sheet. We have an entry deadline, typically about 36 hours before the meet.
They try to fill the lanes in every heat as much as possible. You will see 13-18yo swimming together (and boys and girls, too) in an attempt to make the meet go faster. |
NVSL and our last B meet was pre-seeded by age and gender (for example, 8 and under girls for freestyle, the last meet had 7 heats, with faster girls in heat 1). |
NVSL. We use regular age groups (with an additional 6 & Under group, but typically just for Free/Back). Genders mixed within age groups if they can be combined to save a heat.
No formal time seeding, but clerk or course will typically try to group swimmers generally by time if there are multiple heats. |
