Thoughts on preventative gastropexy?

Anonymous
I have a 8 month old moyen sized poodle, and my vet said if he stays under 50 lbs and there is no history of bloat/torsion in his breeding line (and there is not), that she would likely not recommend gastropexy.

Not OP, but "She doesn’t do them. She seemed ambivalent" is the opposite of what you're alleging. Follow the thread.

Then add that into the original post, otherwise people aren't going to see follow-ups.

Also, NO, why on earth would you do this for a healthy dog without a family history or breed risk??? Money out the window.

I have a standard poodle and I didn’t even do it.

Most people didn’t assume that the vet was just trying to upsell. Only you it seems.

People do them to prevent bloat. If you’ve ever had a dog bloat, it is terrifying and it can quickly lead to death of an otherwise healthy dog. Larger breeds tend to be more at risk. A labradoodle is a larger breed.

Did you do the gastropexy? I think if I had a female, I'd automatically do it with the spay, but with a male it's a harder decision. He's a "moyen" poodle and is 75% standard and 25% mini, so he should be on the smaller side. Mom is about 40 lbs and dad is about 25 lbs. He's 30 lbs right now at 8 months old.

Sigh. Obviously. But just curious of people’s experiences.

you can get this when neutered. It is about 1k more add on and for certain breeds makes sense. Talk to your vet and make sure they do this surgery a lot.
