The only kids I know who got into Yale were either ROTC or athletes.

So that. Plus stats.

My kids aren’t athletes or legacy abd had zero desire for ROTC

The kids I know who went there had the kind of drive and interest that went "beyond." The stuff you really can't fake, because who would want to? (I'm talking the kind of stuff that made their high school lives far less normal and social, because they were so internally driven toward some obsession). FWIW, they were also legitimately good, nice, kids.

They do say that there are a handful of insufferable kids of big donors on campus, too, but that this isn't the norm.

I have a kid who just graduated from Yale this describes her, really from her earliest days. As I met many of her friends and college classmates over the last four years, it seems quite apt for all of them as well. She is who she is and we had very little to do with where she ended up.
FWIW my other kid is totally different, just graduated from a much more conventional four years in high school and headed off to a state school he’s super excited about.

I am from a rural area and Yale seems to be increasing its admits from there. Genuinely awesome kids too. Non athletes or URM. Probably some full pay though.

Rural is the key there. It’s one of the big DEIs that MAGa conveniently forget about. They actually think they got in for their “soft skills”.

The only kids I know who got into Harvard and Yale were ROTC or from rural areas in states that don’t send that many applications to begin with.

Celebrity kids. Rural rich kids. Athletes.
