Summer job for a 12 year old?

Yes, go pick crops in the field for the summer.

A bit early to be drinking.

- Cleaned up debris in our yard after a storm, my husband offered her $50 minus every stick he found that she didn't pick up (it was a big storm)
- Clean out the refrigerator
- Clean out the pantry
- Clean out the coat closet
- Weed
- Sell her American Girl/Our Generation doll collection
- Sort and sell her Lego sets (has not done this one)

I have boys so no American Girl dolls but they are planning to make money by selling Pokemon cards this summer. I am hoping it is successful and will influence them to sell other toys collecting dust.

Dog or cat sitting. Tell your network she is available. You'll need to drive and supervise.

You could also do a whole family yard sale and pay them for working to help with general household clean out and sale set up + getting the $ from selling their toys

So not really a kid job.

I don't know where you live, but in our neighborhood there is a listserve where people will often times post about needing someone to water plants.

We would go with our 12 year old to meet these people and make sure it was legit....which it always was, as well as have them walk away if the neighbor was actually there (when they said they would be on vacation) or if there was some reason the kid would have to go into the house.

Neither of the above ever happened.

You could also sign up on something like Rover to dog/cat sit/board and then have your kid do all the work. You may not want any pets in your home which is the only thing I would probably consider for a 12 year old (and it's the most popular request...people going away that want to board their pet at your house).

+1. There aren't some mythical secret jobs for 12 year olds. It's either kids, pets, or yardwork.

A kid that age in our neighbourhood (not DMV) just put flyers in everyone’s mailbox today for a summer dog walking service, he’s using the name “the DogFather“ and his tagline is “make me an offer I can’t refuse. It’s adorable. I would totally hire him to walk our dog.

Our DS cleans the neighbors pool once. Day. It’s about 15 minutes of work a day, but gets paid well. He doesn’t do any of the chemicals.

You don’t even need a tagline. Just make a list of pets she’s willing to take care of.

We use Rover and have small pets so it’s hard to find someone to come take care of them since they are not the traditional cats or dogs. Rover doesn’t have a fish/guinea pig/hamster/bunny/ small animal section. We’ve had one or a combination of those in the past. All they need is food and water and maybe a litter change. This would be perfect for your kid and it’s hard to find someone now.

Post on NextDoor for her or have her make flyers.

My 12yo DD works as a Mothers Helper every other weekend. It’s 3 hours and she plays with a 4yo boy and keeps him entertained while his mom gets stuff done.
Its not summer specific but if you can
Find a sahm with preschool kids not in camp or preschool they might like her to come entertain kids once or twice a week.

Haha I did the same. DC was happy with that arrangement.

So what did your kid have to do as a CIT?

I think helping keep the younger ones rounded up and doing what they needed to be doing. Making sure nobody was wandering off or getting into trouble. Picking up & cleaning up. Generally assisting the older counselors & responsible adults.

Have her volunteer at a day camp or half day camp. You can then pay her a small amount for her work as a camp assistant.
