Why are you walking/running late at night on dark roads?

Anonymous
A few years ago a woman was hit and killed by a teenager on his way to school. I was driving on that road earlier today, and thought of her as I always do when I take that road.

Folks sharing the road with vehicles, please stay alert. You can't always count on drivers to notice you or to not be under the influence. Be prepared to jump out of the way if you need to.

OP here again (none of the previous entries was me). 10:09 gave me what I was looking for. No I don't want a world made for cars but I can't see how can exercisers can relax while they are near cars. I don't trust other drivers not to be on the phone or to even drive well. If I want nature I go on a hike on a trail. Yesterday, the weather wasn't even nice. I ponder the why of it all.

So their death doesn’t look like a suicide.

They don’t have a fully developed brain and may never have it.

If you are training for a long distance race, your training runs will take up hours of time, so some of them will end up being in the dark.

The sun comes up around 5:45 am this time of year. But regardless of time, people should run/walk on sidewalks or trails, and not in the road. This seems like common sense.

People who do this are stupid. I almost hit someone wearing all black, out walking her black dog at night. When I braked suddenly, she turned around and gave me the finger.

Sorry, if you're that much of an idiot, you probably deserve to be hit.

They have a different risk tolerance than you and are not willing to cede their freedoms to car manufacturers.

You deserve to have your license revoked. Pay attention to what you’re doing - you could kill somebody.

These are roads with no shoulder, not very well lit, large puddles from the earlier rain, where it's hard to make out that there's even a pedestrian on the side of the road. Please explain to me why people go out in these conditions for, seemingly, exercise? I saw a walker with a headlamp, a guy running with some body lights, one guy was literally in the road on the white stripe with no lights. It seems so dangerous to me to do this--you can't see well and you can't be seen well by drivers. How is it worth it to go out so late?

Cooler temps
Less traffic than daytime
Works or night shift person
Whatever the reason, it is their choice.

Not PP but totally disagree. People who wear black and walk at night need to recognize how invisible they are. I tell my kids all the time “you can be right and still be dead”.

Clearly you're one of those dumb $h!ts who dresses in dark clothing while running with traffic halfway into the lane instead of against the traffic. Not to mention the above wearing all black with a black dog at night.

Get friggin' light for yourself and your dog. Or a brain.

Running/walking at dark is fine. Not wearing lights and/or reflective clothing, and walking in or close to the lane with the flow of traffic is just stupid.

I don't get home from work until 8 or so most nights. If I don't run at night, I won't run. And I don't want to be an unhealthy overweight mess. America has a health crisis, and lack of exercise is at the core. I'm on the roads I'm on because my house is where it is.

I do wear a reflective vest.

Treadmill.

Go to a gym.

Walk the track at a high school.

All can be done after dark.

Nope. It would take me half an our to get to "a gym" and longer to get to "a high school" track. And I don't have room for a treadmill.

Hope that teenager is in prison for manslaughter.
