Grade inflation at UVa?

I thought brown didn’t have grades or compute GPA.

Omfg. People are so misinformed about Brown. Yes- they have letter grades and no wiggle room- no pluses or minuses. An 89.9 is a B on your transcript. Someone posts a fake ChatGPT. You can take something out of your concentration/major you are interested in as a p/f but it’s an addition to all of your grade required core. They are handing out less and less As in very recent years.

Two kids there now.

Students are weaker (but grade inflated) everywhere now.

The grades are high but these kids are studying a lot! My UVA student and roommates put a ton of time into studying and are always in the library vs my other kid at a lower ranked school who can skip classes and hardly study and get those grades.

It has always been known for grade inflation.

I guess we never met.

Brown has grades although it is a bit difficult to follow. Ivy grade inflation over time is extraordinary.

Overall, study time has gone down as grades have gone up.

Geez. They had a Covid spike and backed off a tiny bit. Of letter grades awarded 84% are As.

It is not unique to UVA and students are not getting stronger. Rather schools and professors don’t want to have to deal with the backlash of giving a snowflake a “C”.

Yep. NoVA parents are the worst.

Grade inflation in high school is extraordinary as well, particularly in public schools in relatively affluent areas.

Anyone know what caused the huge increase in average GPA? I thought maybe it was because of distance learning but the increase seems to be persisting?

Uva is showing the same post-covid inflation as William and Mary. WM is slightly higher (3.6)based on numbers they release to greek organizations comparing greek and overall. Ivies range from 3.65-3.85 avg these days.

More companies are beginning to scrutinize the courses taken and some ask for SAT. The top ones already preferred ivy+ so uva needs to keep gpa inflation approaching top schools to continue to be right under top targets. Vanderbilt does the same.

UVA Spring 2024 was 3.59. 1991 was 3.09.

Meh. Duke was 3.3 in 1991 when i graduated and DH at hopkins says the median was 3.1-3.2 there around the same time. We have one child currently attending Duke and know a workmate’s student at Hopkins: 3.8 and 3.7 averages respectively. UVA ‘s inflation is consistent with others no big deal.

Just like American HSs. Our Arlington public HS had over 200 kids with a minimum 4.0gpa. 200 valedictorians lol

It is a big deal, it is just happening everywhere.

Yes. My kid is not cheating and grades reflect that. The profs know but feel there is nothing they can do. I feel like they should be able to catch some of these kids and send a strong signal but alas they don’t pursue the cases because it is too much work and there is parental pushback. It’s very sad.
