s/o: Wilson H.S. -- otherwise known as "Yale or Jail"

Is it appropriate to put a list with kid's names on DCUM?

Some of the clips they showed of "Waiting for Superman" talked about how many high schools in our country have a two-tier approach. And if your kid doesn't get on the right track, then your kid misses out on better teachers and better learning opportunities.

For me I'd love to see a high school in DC that is rigorous for all. The fact that Wilson is segregated the way it is, is enough to drive us to private school for high school - I don't care what the college list looks like. I can't support the two-tier approach. It's just wrong.

OP,
What if Wilson had two tiers but most students were white? Not everyone is going to school. This college-bound two-tier system has been around for ages -- since the 1930s if not earlier. If we remove the racial aspects, which are unavoidable in cities like DC, two tiers make sense.

It's beyond true, as well. Please don't immediately believe one person's opinion. There are other opinions out there too.

Kids are not tracked at Wilson - but kids who want to go to college will choose classes that will prepare them. Not all kids at Wilson want to go to college. and not all are shooting for the Ivy league.

Please talk to some Wilson parents and kids to get a full picture.

Yes but they're selective. I am guessing PP means open to all. But the demand for that type of high school is not the same in DC as it is in, say, Bethesda.

So am I to think if I point my child to Howard University that his future is doomed? Again, to enter a college does not mean you will graduate from that same institution. Just as, if you go to criminal institution, it doesn't mean you life has ended either. "Yale or Jail" is just as crude as "white is right and black get in the back." So again, why is diversity so needed, if it produces these results. How interesting that a discussion of this magnitude is at Wilson High School...I wonder if Dunbar or Woodson High Schools have similar discussions titled "HBCU's or Hardtimes?"

11:20 I'm not sure there has been a discussion of this indelicate phrase at Wilson. I do know the two-tier approach comes up when folks discuss Wilson, not sure how the school handles it. Also, how do we know that an AA didn't first describe Wilson this way? There's a racial assumption in your post. If so, does that change anything for you?

You're probably right but I threw it in just in case. Some people don't know that there are actually schools in DC where high performing African-American students are in the majority.

I've talked to parents at Wilson and they have confirmed the tracking and segregation that exists there. Are you saying that things have changed? Listen, every kid that goes to a public high school in this country should graduate ready to go to college - this shouldn't be a choice. I think it's BS that we believe, there are some kids who aren't college material. We on this board all know that you can't do jack in this country without a college education - that's what I tell my kids. So why is it ok for someone else's kid? It's this whole notion of low expectations that keeps public schools from working the way they should. I know it's pollyannaish and that I'll get flamed - but I don't care.

BTW - here is a DCUm thread from earlier this year that discussed Wilson, segregation and tracking.

I'm saying it's informal - for example, some kids want to take calculus and some don't. Wilson is the most racially integrated high school in DC. If mainly black girls want to be cheerleaders and mainly white girls want to row - is that segregation?

If you really want to know about tracking - ask the principal. Ask central office. I think they will tell you there is no such thing.

Jeff, can you please edit out the names from the college list- C-D please. I know a few of the kids and I don't think they want their names broadcasted on DCUM.

Thanks

I don't know why Yale or Jail has to be racial. There are plenty of minority kids with high expectations for themselves. This list looks a lot like the college destination list of Skyline High School in the hills of Oakland, Calif. - another city with over inflated housing costs, a diverse population, and a much maligned public school system. There are kids there going to Carnegie Mellon, MIT, Oberlin, Stanford, Cal State whatever...and kids who are dropping out.
The question is would your child do better at a private school, get better grades, learn more, do better on the SAT, get into a better school, and have a better experience if you pay for private? There will certainly be more peer pressure at a place where GWU, GMU or Brandeis are considered "safety" schools.

The list was on Wilson's website for many months, perhaps more than a year, in the public section, sorry for the inconvenience, Jeff.

OP - this sentiment is not limited to Wilson. I've heard it applied to lots of schools including TC Williams in Alexandria.
