Safeties are not safeties without demonstrated interest

If it's a safety then it's a 75% admit rate. They simply do not care about "interest".

My kid from MD applied to W&M a few minutes before the RD deadline and was accepted. He did not visit, but he did say exactly why he liked W&M. He ended up going elsewhere.

W&M is not a safety, why are you even mentioning it in this thread?

Not for us, anecdotally speaking.

UMD was a safety. DC never visited. Maybe it matters if you are oos or it's private?

My kid got into Vermont, Pitt, Clemson, Georgia, (honors college and merit aid for all) this year without ever visiting any of them.

UGA isn’t a safety

DP, but the point is clear: nearly all public universities, regardless of selectivity, don't consider demonstrated interest.

Lots of ways to show DI, as seen here:

Why would college counselors make blankets like this that are easily proven wrong? Not to mention, for some families college visits can be cost prohibitive. There are a lot of very large public universities with high admit rates that absolutely do not weigh demonstrated interest (I actually consider it one characteristic of what makes the school a safety).

Do any of the schools mentioned on this thread do rolling admissions like Pitt does? I find that to be such a selling point.

Santa Clara could be considered a ‘safety’ by some, but is yield protective. DI is key.

My high SAT/mid GPA kid, full pay, Jesuit high school, visited SCU, applied EA for business, was deferred, waitlisted, and not admitted.

WL... They are waiting for you to write a letter of continued interest or your counselor's call at this point. If neither, rejected.

This was four years ago. Wrote a LOCI.

It's not a safety just because you gave it that designation and your kid got in.

We engaged with all safe and target schools via online info sessions, regional admission events, etc. For ex, Case Western came to nyc last August and made my kid register and go. Then sent a follow up email to admissions asking a genuine question about x opportunity. Kid applied ea, was accepted with significant merit and we didn't even apply for FA. For oos publics, we did online sessions. For schools like tulane and wake, which are explicit about demonstrated interest, we made an actual visit and set up mtgs withfsculty. . Accepted to both, ea and rd resoectively. (And with merit,). Just make an effort and don't cut and paste essays. They matter. We put the work in, and kid got into all safe/targets and several reach

That’s fine, but Tulane and Wake aren’t safeties for most students so these examples aren’t really relevant to this thread.
