Can someone please explain advanced math?

At DS’s elementary it starts in 5th grade. He finished the 5th and 6th grade curriculum this year. He took the 6th grade SOL.

My older child was a GE in an AAP center school. He was pushed in the AAP class for math. Started in 3rd grade.

Anyone can take math 7 honors in 7th grade. There is no barrier to entry. You can fail the M6 SOL and sign up for M7H. M7H is the 8th grade prealgebra curriculum.

The only test that used to have requirements was algebra 1 in 7th grade. That required a pass advanced on the M7 SOL in 6th grade and a 91st percentile on the IAAT test. Those requirements are now gone. The SOL is still supposed to be a requirement, but it is not black and white like it used to be.

My child just took it last year, and has a friend who took it this year. How is the IAAT test not a requirement anymore? Do they just make the kids take it for fun? If so, that’s completely unacceptable.

This year, they decided not to have it as a requirement after the students took the IAAT. They only have to pass advance the math 7 SOL if they want to take Algebra in 7th.

They don’t have to pass. It’s open enrollment. Anyone can take Algebra in 7th.

This is false. Open enrollment is for 7H. Algebra 1 they need to have taken Math 7 as a 6th grader and a Pass Advanced on 7th grade SOL.

Most rising 7th graders are going into 7H at our school. There are rising 7th graders who failed the SOL that are being placed into Algebra 1H.
None are being placed into Algebra 1.

I had a student in Algebra 1H that took Math 6 and failed the SOL. She moved to 7H in October.

It is school dependent. My middle school said anyone can take algebra (honors or regular) in 7th grade. There is no threshold anymore. When I raised it to the principal in a panicked voice asking if that meant kids who failed math 6 could sign up for algebra 1 in 7th, principal said, “isn’t it great kids are choosing to challenge themselves in middle school?”

I want to cry, next year is going to be awful. Class sizes are stuffed to the brim so there will be nowhere for them to go when they are failing in September.

And I’m so so sorry to the geometry and algebra 2 teachers who will be inheriting kids with no math foundation…if they ever pass algebra 1.

DP, but I posted earlier.
Same. Exactly the same here. It's frustrating too, because it is setting them up to get frustrated, fail, and hate math.
