Middlebury has a $1.6 billion endowment on an enrollment of 2600 students. Spare me the outrage.

Middlebury remarks that its recent financial trajectory falls short of literally all of its NESCAC peers:

"Carrying a deficit every June 30, as we’ve done for too long, is too great a weight, one that eventually will hamper our ability to deliver on our mission. Our deficits are continually an outlier among our NESCAC peers, which all operate profitably, experiencing only occasional downturns."

rich people (and colleges) are rich because they dont spend like fools.

a fancy car (or hiring spree) does not equal wealth. often it's the opposite.

Have you been to Middlebury? Who in their right mind would pay to be stuck in the college equivalent of The Shining. The ground is frozen for 80% of the school year.

This is fairly run of the mill and I wouldn't call this a serious problem. I do feel for the 140 support staff who they will lay off.

Looks like they will maintain increased enrollment as a way to make money too. Great new for my DS as this will be his 1st choice next year!

Exactly. Middlebury effed itself. No sympathy, hope it closes.

It's going to have the climate of Aruba in a few years. Just you wait, Emory booster.

There was also this gem:

“To say it as clearly as possible, our challenge is this: We haven’t been able to balance our books despite significant progress in how we do business. We simply must get ourselves to the balanced budget that has eluded us, year over year, to be able to support our mission today and into the future.“

Not as serious, but there’s essentially a hiring freeze at UVA, and other state institutions are posting new positions very, very judiciously. Belts are tightening everywhere.

Omg...did Middlebury's PR team know this was going to be publicized? Embarrassing IMHO but I'm not a Middlebury booster so what do I know, right? Middlebury boosters will probably claim this somehow proves it's a peer of Harvard.

Once again: you'll notice that NO SCHOOLS OF ESTEEM IN VIRGINIA are having as serious fiscal exigencies as Middlebury College in Vermont.

Why is this thread infested with trolls? Who is so obsesed with hating Middlebury instead of just ignoring it?

Ah, I see. Maybe we can blame the brand new president of Middlebury for the problems since he came from UVA.

A bit shameful from the perspective of Middlebury to be the only SLAC of its level to be having these problems.

Two points: 1) If a school of Middlebury's esteem is having serious financial issues, what does that say about the future of schools of lesser repute? 2) Is Middlebury only having these issues because of its small size? If so, does that mean that even marginally larger schools will be better positioned at this time in higher ed? Should we be taking this into consideration when picking colleges?

We're talking about a tiny school. In Vermont.
