Someone said biggest and almost all movement off waitlist comes now and then after this “2nd round” it is 1 or 2 spots here and there but mostly non-existent movement over summer.

Is there an appeal process?

Yes, there is an appeal process.

Apply for 10th grade. Lots more spots in past couple years for 10th than used to be. Don’t someone write 50 kids left this or last year?

If your kid is a strong candidate apply for 10th grade. They call it "froshmore" admissions and as a parent of a kid admitted this way, this actually turned out to be a godsend.

The screening process for froshmores is fantastic. They do not have a limit to the number of students they will take in this way. They don't feel they need to pull "x" number of kids because some have left or can only take "y" because of space. They are going to take all the kids they think are going to benefit from TJ.

This leads to picking kids who are going to do really well at TJ. There is no other criteria or goal. All the froshmore admits have a fantastic experience and also great college results. Out of 14 who were admitted in DC's year, 6 are going to HYPSM and 5 others to T20. I don't know about the other 3. The few froshmores I know are all in the top 10% by GPA also.

I have never hear of an appeal process for TJ admissions.

I don’t think it exists, if so it must’ve been very popular process. I would imagine the headache of the admission.

The froshmore process really should be THE process. but I agree, if you can get in through froshmore process, you can handle TJ. So many people left guessing if they are a good fit academically.

Froshmore students are at a disadvantage because they miss out on the lighter course load and the TJ orientation experience offered during the freshman year. Instead, they must immediately adjust to the academic rigor of the sophomore curriculum. If merit-based criteria were applied to freshman admissions, the number of freshman students returning to their base schools would have been minimal, reducing the need for froshmore admits. Froshmore admissions are being relied on as a mitigation tactic to fill the gap left by the recent increase in freshman departures.

I stand corrected. I have never heard of it and not really sure what world pass muster in that sorry of process other than illness or death in the family.

I have heard of exactly 0 people appealing the TJ decision. I am sure that they are required ot have an appeals process, I don't think anyone uses it. I think we would have heard of people using it successfully and people on this board would be discussing exactly how to file a successful appeal if such a thing existed.

We received an update from TJ that said,

Last Friday, May 16, 2025, we extended the first wave of offers to students who were part of the wait pool for the TJHSST Class of 2029. Unfortunately, we were not able to make offers to everyone in the Wait Pool, including not being able to extend an offer to you. The first wave of Wait Pool offers has historically been the largest but additional offers do continue throughout the summer. You should expect to hear from us again in approximately two weeks.

To me that reads, politely, that "we already took everyone we wanted to take, and any additional offers are going to be negligible."

Froshmore admissions are a thing and frankly if you get in as a froshmore, you are likely to be better qualified than the average TJ student

My DC has all As in 7th except Algebra 1 with an A-. This year in 8th, I think it is going to be the same. All As but an A- in Geometry Honors.

Do you guys think it's worthwhile to try for a sophomore admission next year or is it a waste of time?

DC wants to attend TJ but we are telling him that the math is going to be tougher and not easier but do not want to discourage him.

I told my DC that if he feels strongly about trying a year from now, he can do so. In the meantime, he must apply himself at high school and see if he likes it just as much. He really really wanted to get into TJ because he's a science and computer obsessed person, but sometimes things don't work out. So we'll see.
