I'm democrat, but realistically speaking, with EMTALA laws requiring hospitals to treat/stabilize, but immigrants who don't have insurance, hospitals near the border cannot sustain themselves. To help hospitals stay in business near the border, that would mean a large tax burden on those who live in border states.
What if those folks have a stroke or some serious medical event requiring chronic care in a nursing home, but the hospital cannot discharge the patient because the nursing home will not accept them as an immigrant without healthcare insurance? |
It wasn't sustainable. |
Why are you so tiresome? I’m perfectly fine giving undocumented immigrants who are working and paying taxes until they finalize their paperwork because many of them are doing work neither you, nor I want to do. So you’re fine with giving these South Africans healthcare yes? Is it because you’ll say they aren’t legal? Because free plane rides to the US and all that pomp isn’t free. I’d much rather give a few people benefits who don’t deserve it, then enrich billionaires by more billions on the backs of hardworking Americans. That’s my calculus, and I’m betting that our country, for the most part, agrees with me. Before you cry that I want an open border, I do not. That’s never been a thing. I support deportation of all violent criminals, who have been proven as such in a court of law. |
Maybe he's learned that a vast number of Democrats think that immigrants are welcome and should come here LEGALLY, but also that those here illegally should not be given access to any services.
There's a whole swath of moderate Dems and I think that's who he's trying to woo. He'd get my vote if he took a more moderate stance on some issues. I understand how the MAGA wooed so many of the lower income people to their side. It might be hard for DCUM to understand because most here are wealthy and well-off, but as a true middle class person with an average middle-class job & salary as a teacher, it can be angering to see how much others with less get for free. We can't afford braces for our kid but all of my students on Medicaid get them for free. We went through a rough patch 2 years ago with lots of unexpected expenses all at once that caused me to reach out to our local food bank. I found out that because we weren't on SNAP, WIC, or on section 8 housing, we had to provide proof of income. When we did, we qualified for 3 meals for each person in our household. Not 3 days of meals, but 3 meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner) for 1 day. It was so disheartening. "If you or your husband weren't working, you'd qualify for more." That's what I was told. Even in school, the ESOL kids get so many services and so much aid that middle class kids do not get access to. |
If I buy a pack of gum, I am paying taxes. Does that entitle me to free healthcare in the country where I bought the gum? |

There is something called medical deportation where the hospital stabilizes them and then see them back to their country to avoid long term costs. It's not fair to citizens to cover the ER cost of those here illegally. |
+1 same with providing an education to all of them. It's a burden on the impacted communities. |
I am a huge Newsom fan. I personally am a moderate Democrat so his messaging is music to my ears. I listen to his podcast and it’s fantastic. |
If anything, the Democratic Party needs MORE people like Newsom. All of his “maga” moves are really just normal common sense things that would have been no-brainers to Democrats 10-15 years ago.
In recent years the party has become super liberal - which is why we lose national elections. I appreciate Newsom doing something different. |

No, he's not being Trumpy. He is the governor of a large economy and is therefore obligated to confront reality at some point.
Nothing mixes more violently with progressive governance than reality. Reality is the new micro-aggression. |
+2 his policy changes so far are really just low hanging fruit that Democrats should have never left on the table for discussion. No biological boys in girls sports and non citizens should not have free healthcare while Americans are drowning in medical debt are the bare minimum and would have been common sense 15 years ago. |
Not sustainable. Too many problems in the state and taxpayer needs are not being met. |
Have you ever worked for a nursing home before? They decide whether they want to admit people or not. It’s not our problem to fund long-term care for people who don’t have legal status and can’t afford private pay. |
