I've been there a lot for work. While Iwouldn't exactly recomend it as a travel destination, I have been to actual hellholes (Kabul, Port au Prince. Lagos). Bucharest is not one.

Fair point.

Eastern Europe is probably cheapest but flights might offset that. Friend is going to Bulgaria which she says is beautiful and cheap. In terms of cities, Budapest is very inexpensive.

Spain in the summer is so hot!

Go to Northern Spain. Bilbao, San Sebastian, etc

No, it’s not. What a ridiculous thing to say.

Sighisoara and Brasov are nice though.

Why is Romania difficult as a travel destination? Always on guard? Taking advantage of tourists, actual danger? Please share!

11:14 PP here. Another PP was right to call me out on my characterization of Bucharest as a hellhole - I was mainly basing that on memories of growing up in Romania in the 80s. Bucharest is sprawling and drab to me - curious whether others found it charming. Mostly, the point is that there are so many other beautiful places to visit in Romania. It's safe, great culture and history, and people are friendly. There's a little bit of a language barrier (many people speak French as a second language, though English is more prevalent among the younger generation). Totally worth visiting!!

Cheap to do what exactly Op? Albania has become “cheap Italy” for the summer although popular enough that it’s not super cheap anymore. Montenegro is also gorgeous and less expensive than France/italy. Kosovo is very cheap. Not so touristy though.

If you don't want to go that far, Portugal is still somewhat reasonable, but will be very hot in summer. And overrun with tourists.

Portugal is not very hot in the summer. I wore a cardigan in July in Portugal because it was chilly.

Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Albania, Georgia. Basically, former Soviet Union countries.

Check out the second and third cities instead of the major ones.
