| It won't matter. What does matter is your kid accepted Duke as required...and obviously never told the first school they accepted that they are now going with Duke. THAT was unfair to the first school and, possibly, to others on a waitlist. You clearly knew kid was doing this...so you sound alike. Too bad... |
Give it a rest. For all you know, it is within a less than 24 hour period or something and OP’a kid hasn’t had the chance to withdraw from the first school. You do get a reasonable time. |
| How would they know if you didn’t just get off another waitlist you wanted to go to more? Waitlists have been moving a lot the past few years. Last year my coworkers kid was going to Purdue, then got off Wisconsin waitlist, was going to go there, then got off Michigan waitlist and went there. |
I think the universities SUCK in how they treat kids but I be really worried about them finding out about a prolonged double deposit and rescinding both decisions. When kids sign the common app, they attest that that won't double deposit. There are definitely reports of kids being rescinded from both schools for doing this. It makes me especially nervous coming from a private high school where the college counselors haves relationships with some colleges. I would worry about things getting out. |
+1 We had paid a substantial deposit May 1st for a college. May 10th got off WL at one of the first choices. Literally accepted and immediately after wrote the local rep email and officially withdrew acceptance from other school. |
| What is the OOS college? I can’t think of any that would be better than Duke. Ivies, Stanford, MIT or even a school like Williams I understand, but I would not choose a public university at an OOS price over Duke. |
How about Georgia Tech, Michigan or Purdue if a kid wants to be an aerospace engineer? Duke doesn’t offer aerospace as a major and these are stronger engineering schools as well. |
And for all you know it was one of the waitlist movements from 6-11 days ago, which is far more likely. If it was within 24 hrs, it seems OP wld have said almost immediately the kid was having second thoughts. It is wrong what the family did. |
