W2. That way the employer has to pay social security, taxes, etc. a kid shouldn’t be a 1099. I am a 1099 but I’m 50. I have my accountant file all my stuff.
|
| She need to quit. Restaurant jobs already have the potential of being really sketchy and adding the fact that the guy has sketchy finances. You shouldn’t allow your daughter to be there. |
| 17 year old works at a golf course its W2 |
|
Agree with what others have said - W2 employee. No Zelle for payment. Sketchy for sure.
My first job was cleaning my uncle's offices for his CPA firm when I was that age. He of course did the W2 and appropriate withholding. |
|
Those are huge red flags. Do not go forward with that job.
And also, didn't the Zelle app shut down a few weeks ago? I thought it was dead. |
No, they don’t sound problematic. OP: For the job you describe, payment by Zelle sounds normal. DC should ask to be a W2 employee as opposed to 1099, but for a part time summer job it really won’t make much of a difference. |
Oh gosh, y’all make these ignorant statements with such authority… |
Where are you guys getting this stuff? Zelle is literally part of my Ally bank app and my Capital One bank app. |
| w2 |
The owner said that he could be paid with W2. That wouldn’t be a problem. Choose a W2 |
NP- yes, I use Zelle all the time! Not okay for a restaurant job but it's alive and well. |
Zelle? Must be a zoomer boss. He should just ask for cash. |
OP adding to the concerns here. If this employer is employing people under the table like this, they may have undocumented workers too. This could mean the site is vulnerable to ICE raids. Do you want to put your kid through that? |

+1 on the red flag. My kid got paid by direct deposit and had taxes withheld. He worked a lot last year and we weren’t sure how to handle that so we gave everything to our accountant. He filed a separate tax return for our son and he got a refund of his own.
Quit that job. |
