CAPE scores & consequences?

Do you see 15 year olds in your child’s 6th grade class because they were held behind for years for not passing the CAPE? No. DCPS consistently graduates kids who cannot read or do math on grade level. They do not make kids repeat a grade for CAPE. The test means nothing for your student but everything for the teachers, administrators and superintendent of your school.

The place this breaks down, though, is accelerated math at Deal. In my kid’s year there were 89 8th graders who took the geometry PARCC. 85 tested proficient, with 19 scoring 5s. However they’re doing it, Deal seems to be making sure that the kids they accelerate actually learn the material.

CAPE does not affect school math placement ever.

My child's CAPE scores in math were cited as a basis for math placement at DCI.

Wait, how on earth can they tell which kids are ready for accelerated math?

How? They don’t even get math scores until after school starts.

Folks saying CAPE scores were used for placement the following year... are you sure it wasn't MAP scores? The timing would make more sense.

Our middle school said they look at elementary CAPE scores as well as I-Ready scores, teacher feedback, etc to assign kids to cohorts for 6th grade. But, they’d really be looking at only 3rd and 4th grade scores given when CAPE results are available.

Not at Deal, but at our schools there are certain benchmarks required to get into Algebra in 7th, including iReady scores from 6th grade, teacher input, some extra work/lessons the summer before 7th, as well as a paper test before the 7th grade year starts. Only the school has access to iReady or PARCC/CAPE scores but I would guess there is a pretty high overlap with the group of kids who qualify based on iReady, summer work, and a paper test, and with the kids who get 4s and 5s on CAPE. So the schools may not use CAPE scores, b/c those don't come through until fall anyway, and by then the classes are already formed for algebra.

Schools get the scores earlier than families, often by the start of school or shortly thereafter.

Private HS will ask for CAPE scores (we had to submit our 7th grade CAPE with our HS applications.

Our DCPS MS used CAPE scores to decide who was offered accelerated math classes since the schools get the results at or before the start of school

Schools won’t even get the scores back until October.

Schools and LEAs get scores back in early August.

Okay but it’s not forcing the kids who aren’t proficient to retake the year or be held back. And I assume Deal is using something else besides just CAPE to make the determination of who accelerates. They also used to accelerate way too many students but that is a separate issue.

This is false. hardy uses prior year CAPE to place in math. As colleges return to tests - and so do private schools - CAPE will be used in lower grades. Not elementary! But for selective high schools, they certainly can look at CAPE behind the scenes. So it is used for accelerated placement (you don't repeat a grade if you get a 4 or 5 or even a 3!). and could be used for selective and private HS.

This is just not true.
