Does it matter if cars are no longer made in the USA (or made by American companies)?

Hah, notice they leave out % market share. In Q1 25, GM had a 10.8% market share of new EV sales in the US. Tesla had 43.5%, even with Elon's craziness.

GM has 17% overall (including non-EVs), so their EV market share in underperforming their regular car sales. GM is not offering product consumers want.

As someone who owns a Chevy EV I don't get it. We get buttons! (I hate cars where everything is operated by screen, I don't want to take my eyes off the road to adjust things).

I used to own a Chevy EV. The build quality was average at best. At least parts were cheap.

As for buttons, I guess that's not the deciding factor for buyers. I don't own a Tesla (nor do I plan to, not a fan of Musk), but I've driven them and they have really good software.. way ahead of most EVs out there.

They aren’t made here.
Who cares? I buy what is a good investment.

I bought a Chevy Cruz brand new in 2017 and it was not yet built. It was just built in the OHIO plant close enough to Gaithersburg MD I got a call it is on truck and was there next day at dealership. Literally I had car withing a day or two of being built.

My Hyundai was was held up in the Shipping and Port and Customs for weeks while awaiting delivery in 2022

It anything Democratic Foreign Car buyers of last 20-40 years created Trump in a weird way. All those high paid union jobs disappeared and created angry people in fly over country

Your car may have had final assembly in the USA, but the parts and minor assemblies came from outside USA. Sorry.

There you go.

Most of their parts, not all, made in USA or unstamped.
Roll down windows, no speakers, no radio, no screens, rear wheel drive only, etc.
Noble idea. But a vehicle stripped down this much still costs 28k?

You need to rent a Tesla for at least 3 days so that you can understand how to operate it. There are flywheels on both sides of the steering wheel. Those can be moved up and down and to the sides to do various operations. They can also be pushed. When you push the right one you can give commands so that you don't take your eyes off the road. I just commanded mine to increase the fan speed for example. You can decrease or increase windshield wiper speed by command, increase/decrease volume, change songs or command new music, etc. etc. You can also ask for navigation to wherever you want. I understand that when you first drive a Tesla it can be a bit daunting, but once you learn it, it's great. Yes, you can use the screen, but you don't have to do that. The screen is great for showing you where the cars are around you and for making sure you don't hit anyone. I love the screen for parking since you will always park perfectly. As someone said, the software on the Tesla is very good and keeps being updated.

^ Tesla is the only EV that competes with BYD in China.

And yesterday NY governor said they are taking away Tesla pick up sites in NY. Free trade? Everything is political now. No wonder China is winning. Anything innovative is quashed here in America, including business models. We are GREAT.

Do you think people care about car manufacturing being a thing here? If Tesla does not succeed (which seems possible), will Ford or GM put as much into batteries and research? Does it matter if we all buy BYD cars made in China? Apparently they are far superior and cheaper. What do you think?

Dont you care about good jobs and national security that a strong manufacturing base can bring? It is not all about buying cheap stuff.

Yes, I do care . . . about both. A strong manufacturing base cannot happen if it is not cost effective and competitive. And btw Tesla is an American company that brings a lot of technology to the national security sector.

Trump is not bringing back jobs you fool.

If anything Trump is driving manufacturing to a halt in the US

American cars are POS. Maybe they have some nifty gadgets, but they break down more often than non American cars. Until that changes, I have no plans to buy an American POS car.

Texas has put all kinds of restrictions on Tesla sales in the state.

I prefer my cars from Germany or Japan. When the US makes a superior product, I'll consider a US car.

To keep those union jobs the American people pay $25,000-$30,000 more per new car. It is long past time to remove tariffs on cars and reduce prices.

I do not give a sh#t about maga union members. I really do not want to subsidize them to the tune of $30,000. F them. Car manufacturing including foreign manufacturing operating in the US is 3-4% of GDP.

China batteries are cheaper due to 3 reasons.
1. No environmental regulations. China pollutes the planet more than every other country on the planet combined.
2. No labor regulations. They have literal slaves by the millions there. Slavery is alive and well in China, NK, etc.
3. ....
Ok so just two reasons then.
