OP here. Actually, UMW was "very emo" for my kid and they specifically did not like it. It was the precise school I had in mind when looking for exact alternatives.

What does your kid define as "emo"? That might help posters.... IME MW is not emo at all....

My kid is sporty and very "run of the mill" for this area. They aren't nerdy, musical or into theater or the they/them vibe. They also didn't like UMW because it is too close to home so that school is out of the running. They want the big rah rah school but they want it a few notches below say 'Bama.

So your kid is looking for a conservative school. Why not just go to University of SC?

U South Carolina is your best bet. Social and fun but not super southern like Alabama or Auburn. More variety than Charleston.
Anonymous
OP, just be upfront and say your kid was a school with conservative values. Emo does not equal "not sporty".

Charleston does not have a football team, so that cuts down on the "rah-rah" aspect. The other negatives I hear are the almost 70/30 female to male ratio and the expense of Charleston when it comes to off-campus housing and going out in general.

But my kid isn't conservative. In fact, they're the opposite of conservative but socially they aren't political either. They prefer to focus on things like sports, health..just mainstream stuff away from home. Truth be told, they'd be happiest at a school like Boulder but that's not in the cards so we are looking at school up and down the coast. Charleston is under consideration.

They don't have the stats for merit at U South Carolina.

Where does a B student get merit anyhow? (truly curious)

"they aren't into the they/them vibe". Come on, OP.

🙄 They/them isn’t a “vibe.” What does emo mean? Kids who are into music and theatre and west dark clothes?

Is any college besides like a theatre school really “emo?”

The only kid I know there is transferring out after her sophomore year. She’s a New England liberal and hated it after the fun of freshman year wore off.

Why does everyone feel the need to go astray? It was a simple question and it wasn't about UMW. OP said what she wanted and Mary Wash doesn't fit the bill. Mary Wash has a vibe...and it leans emo.

Now back to discussing CoC.

I think the confusion is that “emo” is NOT how most folks would describe UMW or its vibe, so we’re trying to figure out what OP’s kid actually means when she says UMW is too emo, and what she’s actually looking for in a school. “Sporty/rah-rah” helps, but as a pp notes CoC doesn’t have a football team so it depends how literal she wants that rah-rah feel to be.
