How do you feel about it? Do you worry? |
They all had much experience behind the wheel before they even turned 16. Long trips across country, they'd have to drive a least a few thousand cumulative miles on them before getting to drive alone. |

In HS my oldest would drive 2-3 hours to tournaments and did 6+ hours to the beach occasionally. Kid drives to and home from college multiple times every year. NOVA to VA Tech.
Second kid drove 5+ hours to the beach after HS. Both had other people in the car with them (friends). Second kid got a flat tire 2 hours from home once and was able to figure it out and get it replaced with the help of her friends and phone calls to parents. |

My 17 year old has driven 2-3 hours alone. He’s done 4-5 on vacation with us in the car, and routinely drove pretty long distances from early on while learning to drive. We did many miles driving the just shy of 2 hours one way to visit grandparents and back the same/next day.
I drove myself to college starting as a sophomore, from the top of VA to Tampa. Usually in one day. The first time I’d never driven farther than kings dominion previously. I’d let the kid take a car. |
| I think both kids did 3 hours senior year. One is a huge driver. Drives 9 hours to school, and does huge spring break trips. This last one he drove 40 hours over the week, though his friend drove part of it. Always driving long distances to visit friends and go to events. |
| Oops, pp here…3 hours senior year was HS. |
| My college kid just did 13 hours to Florida for spring break. Multiple drivers but still a long drive in one day. |

Hmmm...my parents let me drive back and forth to college on my own after my sophomore year - that's when I got a car. That was about 5 hours.
My son is a college freshman and drives back and forth to school - that's only about 90 minutes. DD just got her license and hasn't driven on her own anywhere longer than about 30 minutes. |
| They probably drove mostly less than an hour at a stretch when they were 16 and well more than an hour a stretch when they were 17. I remember when one son drove to a tournament that was an hour away when he was a few month shy of 17 and being privately worried. But he was fine. At 18, they both drove to/from their colleges... one had a 3.5 hour commute and the other had a 4.5 hour commute. |
