Univ of MD versus Univ of Delaware Honors College

Definitely UD honors. Beyond the fact that it's a better choice academically, I think Newark is a perfect college town. Walkable, safe, managable size-wise. Your daughter can take the train back to DC cheaply and easily. I have always thought that college Park is a really crappy town as a college town. The campus doesn't feel fun and accessible or attractive.

I’d lean toward UDel where she can be a bigger fish. Being in the honors college will give her a leg up and she won’t feel inferior.

? uh no. What makes you say that?

Honors college is nbd. My nephew went through it at Rutgers. DC did it at UMD. Both dropped it after a year because it really was nbd, and it got in the way of dual major for my kid. DC will be graduating in 3 years as a dual STEM major.

leg up on what? Have your kids ever gone through honors college at these big flagships? It really is nbd. For my kid's case, they got the better dorm the first year. That was the only advantage.

My DC is at UMD now and the question on FC comes up a lot on their parents forum. Overwhelmingly positive, people say that it’s nbd and it’s just one semester. I would pick UMD hands down. Especially if you’re in state at UMD.
My DC was deciding between UDel honors and UMD fire last year so I know it’s hard to turn down the UDel honors college but based on what I heard that’s also nbd.

My DD is at penn state honors. Priority scheduling, nicer dorms, special events, funded study abroad and dedicated recruiting events were some of the benefits she is getting.
My son is at UMD and the area around the campus specifically route 1 has been revitalized. Many restaurants and other shops. He isn’t in honors but has friends who are and their dorms are very nice. UMD has a much better academic reputation but I would weigh that against any honors benefits before making a decision.

It is just one semester and there will be plenty of kids eating at a variety of times, whether or not they are FC. Make the decision based on overall 4-yr program and financials, not on how special the school made you feel by how they admitted you.

+1 I get the "oh they didn't *really* want me", but FC doesn't seem to be a big deal. No one knows who's in it. Just say you're not a morning person so you would rather take the late classes. Also, your kid won't be the only one in FC, so you will find people to socialize with.

My DC's friend was in FC. It didn't hurt their social life. Their social life is more active than my DC's, but then they aren't as academically focused. But, that's a personal issue rather than due to FC issue.

My DC attended UMD from MCPS. DC ran into a HS classmate studying and they went for coffee. The classmate said “oh, I’m FC,” but my DC wouldn’t have known the difference- just thought friend was living at home to save money.

They WERE saving money. FC has the ability to live in dorms right from the start like everyone else.

She is at one of the better high schools in MCPS and is nursing the hurt from FC offer still. The panel of FC students at the admitted students day gave off the impression that it's a little annoying but only one semester.

Lol. Get over yourself. There’s really not much difference between them.

I agree 100 percent. My daughter has same exact choice five years ago. She picked UDELL. They have an amazing Dorm set up for Honors Students. Newark town is literally almost connected to Campus. Cute little town right there. Lots of off campus housing walking distance campus at a good price.

My Daughter took Amtrak back and Forth and I could pick up and drop off easy. She got a top job in DC upon graduation. Also felt like she went away to college and coming to UMD considering I live in MoCo did not feel like going away to college.

They gave her 16K merit aid which cemented decision.

Blue Hens are the Best.

UMD IS really bad for Nursing. First you cant complete the degree at UMD for most have to transfer to UMCC. Second it is not Direct admit.

UDELL is direct admit program and guaranteed in program on day one.

History and public policy and in-state tuition, I would choose UMD any day of the week over UDel. Nobody will even know she is in FC.

Just adding that DC is currently registering for UMD FC classes for the fall. We were both shocked to find out that SOME of the classes are earlier than 3pm. You can check this out beforehand by searching UMD’s fall courses and filtering for FC.

UMD for sure, much better reputation and likely better networking for jobs. And if planning to move to DC after school even better for internships.

From our moco public high school Delaware is the choice if you don't get in UMD, Penn State, OH State etc.
