Grew up going there for summers. Spectacular.

Mohonk Mountain House outside of New Paltz NY, which has a cute downtown area. If you don't want to spend the $$ to stay there, another lodge is close by and you can get a day pass to hike at Mohonk.

Find the strength to drive a bit further (the driving in NY state is SO much easier than further south) and you'll be in BIG mountains with beautiful forests and lakes, rocky rivers, etc.

where in Adirondacks do you recommend?

You mentioned biking so I'll mention this. https://www.adirondackrailtrail.org/

Popular spots are Lake Placid, Saranac Lake, and Keene. But there are so many options depending on what you want. It's a big place. https://visitadirondacks.com/first-time-visitors

People love this place too: https://www.wildcenter.org/

+1 we did the Adirondacks last summer and were surprised at how easy the drive was. Loved lake placid and know others who love saranac lake.

New river gorge is a beautiful area. We also recently checked out babcock state park in WV and it was lovely.
