Bukele was invited to Trump's inauguration back in January. They have been on good terms for a while.
During Trump's first term he referred to El Salvador as a "sh*thole country". El Salvador President Bukele at the White House: “Sometimes they say we imprisoned thousands, I like to say that we actually liberated millions.” I don't think people here can imagine how bad it was in El Salvador. A coworker is from there and would tell me horrifying stories her family members witnessed as she was trying to bring them to the US. Busdrivers being extorted and if they didn't pay their legs were shot and the video was sent to other bus drivers. Other bus drivers were burned alive, pulled out of their buses and stripped naked then their throats were slit. The real reason I think Bukele is buddy buddy with Trump is that he hopes Trump will delay deporting El Salvadorans who are working and sending back money. In 2023, remittances from Salvadorans in the United States into El Salvador totaled over 8 billion dollars, accounting for 24% of the nation's GDP. El Salvador needs the money to keep flowing. Bukele is fine with Trump deporting anyone who is remotely connected to any gang if it means other El Salvadorans can stay. They guy deported was wearing gang attire (Chicago Bulls Hat and Hoodie that many MS-13 members wear - the horns are a MS -13 symbol and he had a large tattoo of a lion that was the symbol of a Maryland Latin gang. So maybe they guy just liked the Chicago Bulls and lions but in El Salvador that is enough to get you at least 20 years in the mega prison. |
Bukele changed the constitution so he could run for president again. It will probably be the last lawful election for a long time. He did help the gang problem but even said he’s not bothered by some innocent men who got swept up in the raids. Trump copied him by arresting people with tattoos with no evidence of being in the gang. |
We have all heard how horrible it was and are genuinely sympathetic. Thank you for proof that the villain has switched from the gangs to the government. |
I definitely think you're on to something. "The real reason I think Bukele is buddy buddy with Trump is that he hopes Trump will delay deporting El Salvadorans who are working and sending back money. In 2023, remittances from Salvadorans in the United States into El Salvador totaled over 8 billion dollars, accounting for 24% of the nation's GDP. El Salvador needs the money to keep flowing." Here are some facts about Salvadorans in the US on TPS (source is AI): *Approximately 232,000 Salvadorans in the US currently have Temporary Protected Status (TPS." *The reason they have TPS? Salvadorans receive Temporary Protected Status (TPS) due to ongoing conditions in El Salvador that prevent safe return, specifically armed violence, organized crime, gang activity, and severe poverty, as designated by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. These factors, rooted in the country's history of civil conflict and natural disasters, create an environment of instability and danger, justifying TPS under U.S. law for nationals unable to safely return. Bukele keeps claiming that El Salvador is the "safest country in the Western Hemisphere." In fact, our State Department just changed its safety ranking from level 2, which advises travelers to exercise increased caution, to level 1, its safest rating. And yet, The Trump administration just extended TPS for Salvadorans until September 9, 2026. Why do so if the conditions that initially formed the basis for granting TPS no longer exist? For context, the current administration has revoked or is trying to revoke TPS status for: Venezuela (350,000): Haiti (520,694); Afghanistan (14,600); and Cameroon: (7900). I will let others decide for themselves why these countries were targeted but not El Salvador. |
Yup this exactly I taught kids who escaped El Salvador when it was filled with gangs terrorizing local businesses. These are criminals who steal, traffic women/guns/drugs, and who rape women during initiation rites. How is this even a question? |
If things are so much better in El Salvador, why did Trump just extend TPS for Salvadorans for another year? They were granted TPS originally due to the extreme crime in their country. |
For the money. |
It’s terrible what’s happening in El Salvador!
Just because a gang member murders people does not mean they should just be thrown into a jail or prison. What ever happened to second or third chances for murderers ? |
Welp, MAGA won’t like that. They claim to hate “illegals” but they’re racist, so you know they don’t distinguish. |
No one is saying that, but thanks for sharing your idiocy. |
Biden extended TPS for El Salvador on Jan 10.
Where do you see Trump was involved? |
I agree. Let’s send down some violence interrupters. |
You are correct and I am mistaken. It went into effect on January 17, three days before Trump was sworn into office. However, Trump could rescind TPS for Salvadorans as he did for four other groups with TPS, including Venezuelans and Haitians. Surely the situation is more dire in Venezuela and Haiti than it is in the “safest country in the western hemisphere.” |
OP from what I see the President of ElSalvador
approval rating is around 80%. People love him. I am not saying majority doesn’t make mistakes. |
