Rosemary Hills or Private?

MCPS public's are overcrowded and discipline is an issue. My kids like their school but if I could go private only for smaller classes (27 kids in K class for my youngest) I would.

Why? What is so good about private? Is it more white students? There, someone said it. From everyone sampled (obvi a small sample) who has done both, all of them say MCPS is better. So why private?

From the aspect where my child scored 98% of the local norm on the MAP-R test, and seeing kids who scored 20 points less than him get into the GT program is very disappointing.

Hardly, nice try though. Over crowded. Teaching to testing. Discipline issues. We need school choice and charters and vouchers, though with strong unions it will never happen. Can't take the competition. So you pay very high taxes, to then go and pay elsewhere. The county counts on this happening...those who can, go elsewhere. It stinks.

DCPS has charters. Bet you don’t want to move there for the schools

RHES was named a Focus School for next year. Which means class sizes will be closer to 19. The staff is mostly good and the principal is very active in managing issues.

That means there will probably be like 15 different Kindergarten classes if they have to keep class size under 20 for a focus school. Used to be 7 sections of Kindergarten years ago.

How would you know other kids' scores? I call BS.

Why was it named a Focus School?

RHES will be a focus school next year so class sizes will be 19.

Things I loved about it as a parent and for my kids:
- the focus on that age group. Everyone there, and everyone in the building, is focused on very little kids and I really appreciated how that manifested in approach, attitude, understanding of behaviors, etc... I was a total convert to this kind of split after seeing their experience of it.
- I liked the principal - found her to be very capable, professional and effective. Lots of people complained about her not being warm and fuzzy enough - but I wasn't looking for that. I thought she was a very effective administrator and the school seemed well run.
- I loved the diversity of my kids' friends group. Socio-economic, cultural, intellectual, etc... - deep and true diversity and it was great. None of their subsequent education (all public MoCo) has been as diverse and I think they are the poorer for it.
- Great playground space

There is a new principal, and she is much warmer than the last one. Great with parents and students (unlike the last one!)

Why was it named a Focus School?

Because the percentage of students receiving FARMs went up (I think to over 30%), hitting the minimum required for focus status.

OP why did you have kids?

No private is better than public
You’d have to supplement there too

Do public and do your job as a parent

I had two kids go through Rosemary Hills. One is now in 6th grade and one is in 4th. It was ok. There were highs and lows. There were a couple kids with bad behavior problems. The teachers were mostly very good. I never regretted sending my kids there, but I was delighted with CCES. Silver Creek is another just ok experience, but I also don’t get a lot of details. I value keeping my kids with their friend groups all the way through school - as much as possible. And I can’t really afford private… saving for college.
