Last year, 20.
2 safety, 2 target, 16 reach. Accepted to all safeties and targets. Reaches 5 accept, 5 reject, 6 waitlist. |
I would recommend 2 likelies, 4 targets, 2 reaches. |
Do you recommend this? That is a lot of reaches |
To each his own re: applying to a lot of reaches. You miss all the shots you don’t take. Just make sure your kid is prepared to handle the possibility of several rejections. Getting Multiple rejections, especially within a short period of time, can be demoralizing if expectations aren’t kept in firm check. |
5 reaches, 3 targets, 5 safeties, 2 likelies (kind of targets, pretty much safeties)
That was way too many safeties. |
If you want a chance of acceptance at 1-3 reaches, probably need a well thought out list of 10 reaches. At least that’s what we see. Those 10 should be well researched and match/fit kids interests, strengths or profile. |
Everything is so variable. Mine added 3-4 reaches they liked a lot but didn’t love as much as others (think Emory, Georgetown, Vanderbilt level), they were waitlisted at all and did better at schools they loved ranked higher. Seems like they should have left all those off, but never could have known how it would play out, and would have liked those over their top rated flagship backup. |
DD had 3 reaches, 3 targets and 3 safeties.
She was accepted ED to one of the reaches. Thinking about it now, if she had been deferred or rejected, I think she might’ve added a few more apps. But the above was the plan. |
Agree with this. Many reaches have acceptance rates of under 5%. They're really not reaches, they're lotteries. However, to play the lottery you have to get rejected a lot which sucks. I see so many kids on Reddit who have a top20 acceptance in hand but are feeling terrible overall because they were also rejected at 10 schools. |
If you want to apply to that many reaches, be prepared for your child to be rejected over and over. As long as they know the odds, fine, but is it worth the hassle and the cost? Here it was about 3 safeties, 3-4 targets and 2 reaches (in one, rejected other) |
Current in-progress list is 5 safeties, 4 targets, 1 reach. Chasing merit aid. |
You miss 100% of the shots you don't take. How do you deal with high school (usually private) who limit the number of applications? |
DC did
2 safeties 2 targets 2 reaches All schools at which DC would be very happy. Results 4 acceptances (targets and safeties) 1 WL (Reach) 1 Rejection Worked out perfectly for DC. |
So far, into 3 T25 reaches. So, the reach strategy is working for my kid who applied to 20 schools. More tonight, Friday, and Monday. |
These are great outcomes. |
