DCPS has a real chance to build on Francis' success with the new Euclid middle school. Keeping the 6 feeder elementary schools together for MS would make a middle school that's big, diverse, and relatively high-performing. Given its central location, I think some people would choose it over Hardy or an Eastern feeder, especially if they felt optimistic about their chances in the HS lottery or planned to go private/move. |
What's going on at CMI that caused a loss of 51 kids? |
I will be curious how things go for TR once JO Wilson renovates. |
Interesting to see the effect LEARN DC has had on Leckie. |
Bad test scores, inconvenient commute other than by car (admittedly this allows them more outdoor space than most schools: great for early childhood but at a certain point the goal of school is to learn). There have been renovations and other improvements at nearby DCPSs (including switching them from PK-8 education campuses to regular elementary schools), so people are more likely to enroll there. |
That would be a huge change for Francis and I doubt Francis families would support it. I think the new Euclid middle has a good chance to succeed with the three feeders DCPS is planning for. |
As someone who has been watching the high school diversity numbers, specifically for some time it's worth noting that, as SWW becomes harder to get into and also fairly opaque in its admissions policies, McKinley Tech and Banneker are continuing to attract more white students.
Banneker went from 37 to 65 white Students an increase of 75% Meanwhile, McKinley Tech went from 24 to 34 white students a 41% increase. |
I think the Coolidge drop was intentional to take less out of bounds kids due to overcrowding. |
Yes. And 64 kids is far less than 10% of the student population (of 1050). |
I'm worried about Euclid succeeding as planned, tbh. With just three schools, its just not big enough, and is not going to have a big enough cohort of high achievers to warrant advanced classes. Even Francis doesn't have advanced classes. But if they were combined into one school, it could totally happen. |
Three schools is fine for S-H and EH though. |
Right. And you would lose a lot of Francis families if you told them their kids had to go to middle school over at Euclid. It’s far and inconvenient. This is not the solution PP imagines. |
Cleveland, Garrison, and Seaton is really 2.5 schools because the dual-language kids at Cleveland have programmatic feeder rights to MacFarland. And Ross is so much smaller than the other schools that sending all of them to Euclid would still not make a Deal-sized school. It would likely be the size of SH or EH. |
Plus OOB kids attracted to the new building. I am zoned for Langley and would certainly put it on my list for 6th. DC has many friends who attend Seaton already, and it's sure to be better than our IB. |
They are also the first school for which the “hold harmless” provision no longer applies because of projected budget cuts. They are losing $1.2 million and 12 positions for their final year in the swing space. |
