Rec for Chicago suburb with nice restaurants, hotel, spa

Anonymous
Second Evanston and Oak Park as city suburbs and you won't need to drive or rent cars. Lake Geneva and Galena are NOT in the Chicago Area - they are WAY farther out than even distant exurbs like Rockford. Lake Geneva is actually not even in Illinois at all, it is across the border in Wisconsin.

Yes- not quite why they are going to Chicago if none of them live there. Sounds like they want a more resort-type area.

Two of us have work- and family-related reasons for being there that weekend, so the third person is coming to meet us. We don't necessarily want a resort, but more like a cute downtown with some shops and good restaurants, and a place to get a massage.

Will you be in the city itself for work/family visits over the weekend? If so, definitely Evanston or Oak Park.

If not, the Herrington Inn & Spa in Geneva, IL, is a good option—situated on the Fox River in a cute town with shops and dining. As a pp noted above, Geneva is about 35 miles west of the city.
