Why do Republicans want more debt? Is $37T not enough?

What are you proposing it? To shore up SS or extend tax cuts for the wealthy? Because my answer depends on yours.

We paid into Social Security for years. It's our money, not the gubmint's money. Ours. We want it back.

Maybe to balance the budget and make social security solvent. Not to keep debt at its cuurent level or make it worse and to extend the Trump tax cuts. And certainly not to increase them. Not without keeping the ITS collecting all revenue. You can’t talk about the expenditure side without talking about the revenue side.

It’s unrealistic to talk about raising the retirement age unless we are willing to put protections in place for older workers. People 50 and up are vulnerable. They are frequently laid off and then can’t get jobs. Millennials are fast approaching this very problem themselves.

Frequently people are forced to start drawing social security sooner than they want because they don’t have a choice

It doesn’t seem like their intended cure to SS, Medicare and Medicaid are enough to put a dent in this projection:

“CBO estimates that if provisions of the 2017 tax act were extended and there were no other changes to fiscal policy, debt held by the public would reach 214 percent of GDP in 2054, 47 percentage points higher than in the long-term baseline projections. If interest rates also increased each year until they were higher by 1 percentage point (before accounting for macroeconomic effects), debt held by the public would grow even larger, exceeding 250 percent of GDP in 2054.”

Why can't they just abolish the social security cap? I make more than the current cap. I'm happy to pay more. It doesn't hurt one bit. That's an easy change that could help shore up social security.
Social Security is not supposed to be a welfare program, but a pension program.

Wait - supplemental social security (SSI) is meant to be a welfare program.

What’s wrong with that?

SSI is a welfare/insurance program yes. Nowadays it is being abused by whole towns.

Bumping this so we can talk about the deficit and the Republicans tax plan.

Talk to the republicans about that. They’re creating the debt crisis.

Duh op. The very rich want to become richer with tax cuts. So they cut the agency that does meals on wheels and give tax breaks to Elon musk
