Thoughts on UVM?

My DS heading there in fall as a freshman and he’s really excited. It’s a popular choice for solid ( but not rockstar ) students from our high school in Maine. So we know lots of families who have kids there in a variety of majors and are really happy with school. I didn’t initially think it would feel like such a good fit for our kid so went in with low expectations but we all came away pretty excited. We’re aware of the challenges Burlington is facing but really lived the school, his program, and the life/work balance vibe of the place.

In the Honors College or LASP the classes are small and seminar-style. It's in Vermont - so cold in the winter - but beautiful, and fall and summer are fun and gorgeous.

Vermont is a tiny state, so the school is dependent on OOS students.

I went in the 90s and do did dh (my dad was a prof). Pretty irrelevant to this discussion except that we both are very successful business owners. Nephew is now a sophomore (in state) and is an electrical engineering major. Loves it, wants to intern for an electrical aerospace co, hoping to do research with a professor on Nuclear powered rovers. My sense is that STEM is strong, humanities are not anymore (used to have wonderful English and history depts).
