Where should we send our kids to school?

To pick up on PP, definitely check out the aftercare if both parents work. I was turned off from Eaton because I happened to be there one afternoon and saw a bunch of older kids wandering around with what looked like minimal supervision. The kindergarten rooms/teachers were impressive, but without good aftercare, for me, that's not enough.

For Cap Hill, Peabody is fine. Things fall apart in the second grade at Watkins. The school hasn't made AYP in 2 years, despite being one of the most affluent in WDC. I wouldn't move to the Hill for the Cluster Schools.

my understanding of the test scores at stoddert being slightly lower than those at some other nw dc elementary schools is that there is a more diverse student body..more english language learners students (from the russian embassy, etc.), students from one of the military bases in dc. also stoddert is a very small school (300 total students) so test score averages for each grade can change alot with just a few students. from what i understand, people are very happy with the new principal and parents are very involved.

Just curious - charter schools off your list? Anyone (non Janney/Murch please ), pick a charter over a neighborhood?

OP here - the charters (the good proven ones) are very difficult to get into. I really don't want a lottery to guide our decisions. I've known many families whose hopes are pinned on good charter schools and then they don't get a spot or 1 child does and the other doesn't, etc... I just want to live in a nice neighborhood and have my kids go to the neihgborhood school.

In hindsight, silly point. Yes, Janney/murch, all opinions welcome!

We're considering sending our daughter to Yu Ying instead of Murch.

Janney and Murch are expensive areas to buy and rent it, so I understand why the poster is looking at other options.

Thomson Elementary School, International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme, Chinese language study, interesting demographic, and newly renovated building downtown, near Logan Circle.

We moved for Oyster and love it.

If you need after care the extra positive is Oyster Creative Activities, which the school offers in addition to the standard DCPS (formerly DPR) program.

Janney is about to start some major construction, so I would go elsewhere for a couple of years...
