Why are most believers tolerant of religious people but not of non-religious people?

This premise is based on experience. Please think about it some more. People in the US at least will say that they respect other religions. But rarely if ever say anything positive about people who don't have a religion.

Says who?

Personal experience and experience of others who don't believe in God.

Others who don’t believe in God? All of them? You know all of them?

You do know that your personal experience is not evidence that your premise is true? You do get that, don’t you? If you don’t, then no one with any analytical skills will be able to have a conversation with you on this or any other topic where you extrapolate the experience of a single person to apply to all people.

Nothing has been extrapolated. Pp said it was their personal experience and their known experience of others who don't believe in God, not "all people" as stated above. It is my hope that more people will address the the question instead of deny that there can be a conversation about this because a poster does not approve of how the question was posed.

Because religions are organized. If one religion attacks the other, there will be slap back on a platform. Atheists are not organized and don't have a platform, they are easier to bully without suffering consequence.

It seems like belief in anything supernatural, even if it differs from your personal supernatural beliefs, is preferable to not having any supernatural beliefs at all.

Why do you think this is?

You are completely wrong in your premise. What do you mean people do not really accept people who don't believe in any religion That is absurd unless someone is in the bible belt of idiots.

100% people with no religion are smarter than people who believe in indoctrination.

Smarter about religion, right? But not necessarily smarter in general.

Interesting. I wonder if religious people intrinsically know this.

OP here - that's interesting, if true, but in my IRL experience, people just assume it's OK to talk about God and to deride people who don't believe in him, without even knowing about my beliefs. There's an assumption that I'll agree or at least be OK with it.

This might be true and is a good point but I also wonder if it’s just a simple matter of religious people believing they are superior and non religious people are inferior in many ways. Selfish, self centered, materialistic , etc. It’s a matter of looking down on anyone that doesn’t have the “wisdom” to recognize that there is a god (of any kind )

Maybe so. It would be good if religious people would post their thoughts about this here.

I reject your premise.

The most intolerant people I know have always been deeply religious people - they are intolerant of any other form of belief or non-belief. If you're not part of their specific religious group, forget it.

This. I don’t care what other people believe or whether they do. Literally had no bearing on my friendships.

Do you know whether or not other people are religious? Do you use religious language in your speech? e.g., "God willing", "Have a blessed day"

If someone you liked and respected told you that they didn't believe in God, would you be shocked? speechless?

Is your only exposure to other societies Western Europe?

Perhaps you prefer being born in Nigeria, Qatar, or KSA where being an atheist is punishable by death?

Or maybe one of the 72 nations worldwide where there is no laws prohibiting domestic violence?

Some cultures are superior to others and it’s disingenuous to claim otherwise.

What is the point of response behind your non-sequitur?

Maybe try not talking about religion all of the time and you'll realize most people don't really care about it.
