VA Tech - how to make it seem less imposing

Go during football season

I attended VT in the 90’s and found lots of fun, small places to enjoy. I used to go to the Duck Pond to sit under a tree and read when the weather was nice. I also used to walk on the golf course at night with friends…just to walk and talk. They might have it blocked now, but I also used to walk up the fire escape outside the entomology building up to the top and just look at the stars at night. I also used to go walking (with friends) on a small trail towards the stables. It is a big campus, but it is gorgeous in the fall and spring. I took the time to find a few favorite places and really enjoyed them.

Guess you missed the Duck Pond.

FWIW, my dd didn’t like it either. 2 of her friends go there and love it.

+fresh mountain air, beautiful skies, foliage

I lived the drill field. Such a big fun gathering spot

I spent two summers down there when I was a student and we spent many days down at the river – absolutely beautiful. Sometimes we would also go hiking to see the waterfall at Cascades. I don’t know, I came to really love the gray hokie stone and fact we have a piece in our basement. But every school is not for every kid.

Not as hard as it used to be, poor seasons have consequences. It’s sad how far VT football has fallen.

Honestly, what's so great about the duck pond? I've heard it mentioned a few times.

It's funny how people come away with different impressions. OP, I agree with others that part of the issue is just the season. It is beautiful in the spring and fall. Redbud trees all over the place in spring, and gorgeous foliage in the fall. And trees? They're everywhere. But of course, in the winter, the leaves are down. We loved the bluestone buildings and Gothic architecture - reminded us of Hogwarts. The drillfield is full of students during warmer weather. In short, it may not be the school for your daughter and that's fine! But both of my kids fell in love with it immediately, after visiting in the fall and again in the spring. GL!

DP. It's just a beautiful, quiet, relaxing place to go. Is that ok?

I would encourage your daughter to apply. If she gets in, then she can tour again on an admitted students' day.

Admitted students day was in April for our DC, if I recall - and it was just so beautiful with all the spring flowers and trees blooming.

It is a large campus, but my Hokie takes the bus around so they’re not walking across the drillfield multiple times per day. There are really nice spots- Hahn horticulture garden, Torg library, Moss arts, etc. that feel quite warm. It takes a bit of effort to know your way around the buildings but I think my son felt comfortable with getting around by his first weekend there.

It might not be what you envisioned, but I would keep an open mind about Blacksburg because there is a really nice sense of community.

Hahn Horticulture Garden is beautiful. Would be a lovely place for a wedding.
