Hypothetical re travel from NYC to DC

I do love the threads where people pose this sort of scenario, and there are some good responses. And then of course very reasonable followup to get details for detailed response- but OP never returns to answer them.

I would check the price of a train ticket and a plane ticket and take whichever one was cheaper. I would probably leave that evening rather than waiting for the morning if something was readily available.

I would stay up late drinking and then get the Chinatown bus at 2 am.

Amtrak is having a crazy sale on late night trips between DC and New York so I would do that without hesitation. I think it’s something like 25 or $30.

Train. Where I’m likely to be — and likely to want to be, it doesn’t make sense to spend the time getting to and from the airports or going through security. Amtrak will get me from the center of one city to the center of another.

Good to know! Those are great prices, especially if they don’t have to be purchased too far in advance.

It’s actually 10 to 25!

If I was in NYC I would take the train and not be bothered having to get to the airport and deal with that. If you’re already in a suburb of NYC then I would probably just fly given proximity to the airport.

Definitely the train.

I live in NYC, and unless there is some big reason why we'd need a car at our destination, we prefer to take the train when traveling to DC, Philly, and Boston. It's much easier to get to Penn Station than it is to get to any of the airports, there are no lines to deal with, the trains are usually on time, and it's a comfortable way to travel.
