PP, is this true for all MCPS MS or just this one? Thank you.

Its true of all MS and HS except for strict teachers but most are relaxed.

Wow - this is the first I am hearing of this - is this because they get in-class time for homework but instead are looking at non-HW related sites?

Because they are super long classes so kids finish the work quickly. The teachers sit at their desk and teach like they’re still on zoom

Great - why doesn't MCPS have better investment in MS? Their HS and ES levels seem much better.

I agree, a lot of room for improvement in MS, however the deal with Loiderman is they follows a block schedule which is extra long classes (90 +mins). It’s really tough on many kids (and probably the teachers too).

Only 4% of the student body is at grade level in Math. 32% in reading. Not good.

With an overwhelming majority of students lower SES, it is not likely the parents are helicoptering the students into afterschool academic enrichment, which is the main reason some students perform higher than others. It’s the environment, not supposed ability.

That said, they are mostly art students and they seem happy there.

Isn’t the loss of the block schedule what some TPMS parents are histrionic about?

+1 - have talked to parents whose kids are in advanced math/Global Humanities and love the creative/performing arts and having a great experience there

We liked the block schedule.

Our DC likes the block schedule a lot. Plenty of time to do work during class and not bring it home. Only planning for 4 classes a day rather than 7. Generally not having to rush.

+1 on HIGH and math at Loiederman - they've been excellent. DC's English _teacher_ is wonderful, but the curriculum is utterly non-challenging, which is why HIGH is so important.

Overall DC loves the school, and so do we. Well worth the travel for the clear and genuine commitment of the teachers.
