Racism in Australia

They are worse than any other place I’ve been. I’m white but Eastern European and they talked to me to my face about other races as well as Slavs as inferior to their culture. During one conversation I literally couldn’t hold back and told the guy he should stop talking given that his ancestors were criminals deported by England. He stopped talking then.

Of course there are also lovely Australians but my experience was that they are not nice people as a whole. I also found them very sexist, which is saying a lot since I come from a traditional culture and am myself fine with cooking while DH does the heavy and dirty jobs around the house.

I am sorry that was your experience. Sounds obnoxious if they were not joking around. We have experienced a great deal of welcoming kindness and good humor in Australia.

There is definitely a lot of progress to be made towards gender parity and the Aussies are working on it.

When it comes to female representation on private boards, Australia ranks top, just ahead of the UK, with women occupying 34% of all board positions in Australia's largest companies versus UK's 33.1%. US and India have 28% and 16% respectively.

The Aussie gender pay gap is at a record low of 12%. In 2024, Australia ranked 26th in the world for gender equality, while the US ranked 43rd. Aussie gender parity has improved a lot in recent years.

More employers are offering paid parental leave equally to men and women. Australia's policies on paid parental leave and corporate management transparency have helped boost women's representation and participation.

Overall women form 38% of Australian federal parliament and there is a big push to increase increase female quotas n politics. Female interests need to be represented in politics for attitudes to change.

Aussie women also enjoy full reproductive rights in all states. This also enhances their life expectancies and reduces maternal death rates.

Again I am sorry you experienced sexist nonsense when you visited. That’s shameful.

Who exactly were you hanging out with? I’m a second generation Australian Slav who grew up in one of the most racist parts of Australia and never had anyone comment on my Slav ethnicity. Of course I’m not saying there isn’t racism but that one is odd in this day and age. If anything, I’d say the older generation of Slav migrants who arrived in the 1950s and 1960s tended to be pretty racist (I had a front row seat for that). Probably unfortunately the case for many of that older generation.
