In our judicial system, you get the benefit of the doubt. Innocent until proven guilty. Fenty has been proven guilty, Gray has not.

Excuse me. In what forum, other than DCUM, has Mayor Fenty been "proven" guilty?? Or is it simply that if you repeat allegations enough times, they become "proven"?

The fact is that certain contracts awarded by Fenty are currently under investigation. Get it? Under investigation. That means a finding is pending.

And while Mr. Steele, our DCUM overlord, apparently wishes to play judge as to which facts should be allowed into evidence, many of those facts are still in question:

Oh, I know, I know, the Washington Post isn't even a paper!! It's owned by Fenty! It has it's nose shoved up Fenty's ass! Unless you want to link to it numerous times to support the Fenty-hating that has overrun this forum. Then it's a great paper. In fact, I think it was reported today in the Post that Fenty shot an innocent dog at the Adams Morgan Festival. And the Gray campaign says it's true, too. I believe it!!!

Cronyism isn't a new idea, but Fenty's brazenness about it certainly takes it to a new level.

The story resurfaced on Friday because of a letter that Bill Slover wrote and the Washington Post printed:

VOTE GRAY.

That's like saying "Vote Gray. 33% less sleaze or your money back"

Aside from what you are voting AGAINST, what are you voting FOR?

You need a reason to vote for Gray? Seriously? Here it is: Vote for Gray so he can try to turn all of Northwest Washington into the garbage dump he's been promising us since last March. You'll get exactly what you deserve.

When a man tells me who he is, I believe him.

I'm pretty sure that's not one of his campaign promises. Can you find a link to a story or transcript that backs up your claim? It would be so helpful.

Thanks!

OP, there are risks either way. Four years ago I voted for Fenty after worrying that he was too inexperienced and shallow. Four years later, he's done some good things but I'm voting for Gray because I think Michelle Rhee is not the best hire for Chancellor. I'm guessing that Gray will also disappoint me in some way as well but I already know how Fenty has disappointed me and it's been huge. So I voted to give Gray a shot at mayor. Hopefully he won't be as big a disappointment as Fenty but there are no guarantees.

Good luck with your decision. I know it's tough to decide and you'd like to have a crystal ball to know what to do! So would I!

OP...I feel your pain. Simply put, though. Gray is a gamble. I really don't know what he stands for. Fenty has made mistakes but he has made this city much more livable and the progress is really palpable...I feel like I know what I'm getting with him, warts and all, and really think it's crucial to keep up the momentum we've achieved.

Ha, good joke, even if I am voting for Fenty.

I am giving Gray a chance. I think both of them are running campaigns full of meaningless rhetoric, so I have to go with what has already happened.

Though the school system may be arguably improved, other agencies are in shambles. Plus for those of us that live in "marginal" areas DCPS has not gotten much better and the lottery is just that.

Fenty put all his eggs in the DCPS basket. Schools are not everything in this city, even if you have school-aged kids.
I am hopeful that Gray can come through, I have lost faith in Fenty

I'm of a different mind. Can we talk about "marginal areas? Fenty is trying to rebuild these areas. Ward 8 just got it's first official supermarket in the neighborhood. Ever. Deanwood just got a beautiful rec center. Libraries are being rebuilt, schools are being rebuilt and improved, crime is down in those "marginal" areas. Where's your kid? Oh, he's at the pool or playing ping pong at the rec center or at the library. Yeah. that's pretty awful. We want our poor kids on the streets. In schools with leaky roofs with complacent teachers who are more concerned with discipline than with teaching.

Since when is Fenty responsible for a new grocery store? That decisions was made by the corporation.

On the other, it is easy to build all of these new toyas when you aren't willing to make the hard decisions about when and where DC assets should be leveraged. I take the opposite view:

These new toys can and should be built, but the contracts to oversee their construction should be given to people in the construction business, not to unqualified fraternity brothers who are skimming DC taxpayer monies off the top.

This is where Gray and Fenty people differ. Fenty people are willing to overlook the gross mismanagement of DC assets, whether they are surplused buildings being given away to developer friends (rather than Chater schools), spending down the $1.2 Billion budget surplus to the point that it is gone, or by awarding contracts to friends and cronies by flaunting the law that mandates approval by the city council.

If you want four more years of Barry style politics, then please, go ahead and vote for Fenty.

I will support the other guy, who wants all of the continue to move the city forward, but do it in a way that is LEGAL and not divisive.

Why would Fenty want to avoid sending something through the Council? I'm not being facetious here--it's the question that runs through my head every time I read this allegation (which on this forum, is about every other post!).

I've listened to Gray and his supporters complaining about not being respected, not being heard, not being included in the process--and I can't help but conclude it was how this mayor was able to get so much accomplished. Because seriously, I live in what's considered a "marginal" area and I can't say that he's been ignoring us. We've now got weekly street cleaning on newly paved streets, parks I'm no longer afraid to enter, punctual trash collection, streets salted and cleared of snow in the winter, potholes fixed in the spring, street corners where I'm more likely to see a policeman than a drug dealer, economic development along a nearby thoroughfare that includes several sit-down restaurants, a farmer's market, grocery store, pharmacy, dry cleaners, coffee house--and several long-empty storefronts with new permits in the window hinting at more to come. If you'd asked me four years ago, I would have said that we would have moved out of this neighborhood by now. Now we're speculating on how much our home value is going to go up if we stay.

Honestly. These are changes I never even hoped for and I'm having a hard time reconciling the term "mismanagement" with all the improved quality of life in my immediate vicinity.

Get your facts straight before you mouth off. Who do you think allows the corporations to come in and build grocery stores?Who provides the incentives for them to take the risk in high crime/low income neighborhoods and who gives the stamp of approval? The mayor, the city council and the commissions comprised of people nominated by the mayor.

And don't give me that BS about spending down the surplus. We are in the biggest financial recession since the great goddam depression. The money was gone before he even had a chance to spend it. Comparatively speaking , we are doing better financially than most major cities in the country, thank you very much. And that's because of Mayor Fenty. Get your facts straight

Whoops. 10:48 hit enter before I did I guess. I'm with you and you've made some great points My beef is with 6:28. To anyone who's undecided, vote for Fenty.

15:16 Get off your innocent until proven guilty high horse. We judge politicians in the court of public opinion all the time. There is a serious appearance of corruption here with Fenty awarding millions in contracts to his fraternity brothers. Is that worded to your liking? Either way, what does it matter? Every Political Science 101 student knows that perception is reality when it comes to politics.
