When you have people over…..

It is a hostess gift and if someone informed me otherwise I would raise my brows at them.

This reminds me of when Moira Rose brings Stevie a bottle of wine and then takes it back because she sees that Stevie already has a bottle open. It’s so rude, it’s funny.

LMFAO, I was waiting for you to reference "the help" as in any tawdry gift brought by your guests would be promptly sent home with "the help."
My butler's pantry is used for cooking and food prep, that way we can keep the primary kitchen presentable, so I usually put the wine on the bar. No one brings beer or liquor. However, I do have one friend with impeccable taste in wine, his gift often ends up being opened at some point.

Why is "potluck" in quotes? They are actually called potlucks. Your dinners are obviously very formal. Not everyone hosts in the same way so there may be no etiquette rule violated by having someone take home the alcohol they brought.

The quotes provide a barrier so PP doesn't have to get too close to the ickiness of a potluck.

I really don’t care. If they brought something & we don’t drink it, I’m happy if they want to take it home & will drink it. Unclench.

I assume the people you’re having over are your friends, or family - people you care about. Ask them.
