OP. Are you Indian? |
Book all the hotels and train tickets before you go to India. Reach Delhi. Stay at a 5 star hotel near Lutyens' Delhi. Call and tell the hotel to arrange for your car and driver for the trip. See Qutub and Humayun's tomb (and the underground museum) on the first day. Eat lunch or dinner at Karims in Lodhi Road.
Catch Shatabdi train to reach Agra. Stay at a 5-star in Agra. Ask the hotel to arrange for hotel car for pick up, to take you to Agra and to drive you to Fatehpur Sikri. Take the Shatabdi back to Delhi. Ask Delhi hotel to arrange for pick up from train and also to drop you to airport for flight back to USA. India is fun to travel in if you are not slumming it. You can also travel in a lot of luxury. Yes, close your eyes to the poverty and remain in the affluence bubble. Want to pick up handicrafts? With kids, you are better to go to exclusive markets instead of Dilli Haat. Hauz khas is pretty good too. Don't do places like Chandani Chowk. If you do stick to the OMaxe Mall in Chandani Chowk. - Dilli girl. |
I am a Delhi girl and it takes me a long time when I go to Delhi to start enjoying it. I have a love-hate relation with Delhi. The crowds, the pollution - another level. And I cry each time when I come because Delhi is also magical with amazing food and just super vibrant. |
Never take a train in India holy crap! Just go private with your transportation as a general hard rule. Thank me upon your return ![]() For what it's worth you couldn't pay me to go to Delhi or Agra again. But I would consider other parts of India maybe. Depending on how much you would pay me! lol |
You book in Shatabadi or most expensive train tickets you can get to go to Agra. Most of the foreign tourists try and pay the cheapest prices for travel, food and stay. They get what they get. No one does luxury better than India. But, you have to pay for that. Or you could do Rajasthan on the Palace on Wheels for 10 days. https://www.palaceonwheelsindia.com/?gad_source=1 |
We went to Agra and stayed in Oberoi. Went to Taj, went to little Taj, and went to Fatehpur Sikri.
Mind-blown. |
You can also take Gatimaan express. Expensive enough for people not to take it. You need to book ticket online. Buy the most expensive ticket. Reaches you from Delhi to Agra in 100 minutes. Serve you breakfast also. AC. Starts from Hazrat Nizammuddin Railway Station. Get a guide to go with you if you want to board the train. |
Op here. We are not flying from DC to this. We will already be in India and this is just a small side trip. We will be flying into Agra and getting a 1 way cab from there to Delhi. We are south Asian so won’t stick out. I know the weather is not ideal but this is our only travel window each year. Thanks to those that had helpful tips. |
Thanks dilli girl. What exclusive markets do you recommend. We are vegetarians. I’m from south India. What are the good restaurants that match the Delhi street food for taste but are clean and hygenic? |
So true. I was there for a month in my early 20s. A fascinating place, unlike anywhere else I’ve ever been. And also one of the most overwhelming, overstimulating, chaotic places. Going anywhere in India is a feat of endurance. |
Before you go, buy a water bottle with a filter straw. Or get one of those steri pens that REÍ sells
|
do you hate yourself? ugh the heat and grossness. go up north or down south to Kerala/goa. |
The Potbelly, Bihar Bhavan, Chanakyapuri. |
