What good privates are in Virginia?

+ St Anselm’s
Supportive and kind environment; lots of boys that are strong in math; boys are good to each other
Catholic and all boys

I’d avoid the all boy Catholic schools, except Damatha.

All the other schools mentioned so far are <5% black students.

My son's recent class at St. Anselm's was 15-20% black students. That is pretty standard at SAAS.

I would definitely second the many suggestions for St. Anselm's. It has high academic rigor and a great deal of diversity for such a small school. I remember seeing somewhere that the school is around 40%+ students of color.

You’re lumping all non-white kids.

Second this suggestion.

Honestly, with those scores your child will get in anywhere. Sidwell, St. Albans, GDS and Maret aim for the top and the ones where the resources will be the best. I would suggest also for your DS to focus on his extracurricular activities too that he wants to pursue. He sounds like my DD, a math whiz who loved robotics and is now studying at a Top 10 out of one of the Big 3 schools.

I doubt any privates could accominate that. Your best bet is a public that can transport him to a HS but you need to make sure they have classes past Calc.

OP congrats to you.

What other ECs is he interested in? That is important. Sports?

Georgetown Prep has advanced Math classes, admittedly because of all the Asian boarders.

It is a great and welcoming school. But percentage of black students is less than Maret, which is a great school too.

This is dramatic. No need to relocate again to Virginia (and I’m from there). Jackson Reed is a fine school if DS has to go for 8th before transferring to private

Feels like OP would do best to move to VA or MD. Is there a public equivalent to TJ or Blair in DCPS? I think either would be a better fit for OP’s kid than private.

Would not recommend Landon for you.

As others have said:

The DC magnates Banneker and School Without Walls might be of interest. The top academic privates are: Sidwell, GDS, St. Albans. Maret and WIS are also strong. WIS sends has the international baccalaureate program and sends kids to great schools.

As others said, if you moved to Maryland, you could look at Montgomery Blair (public magnet). In Virginia, Thomas Jefferson is the 14th best public school (magnet) in the country (though it used to be 1st). Not a lot of black students, though.

St. Anselms is another possible option.

Suggest you call various admission offices. Are you looking for Sept. 2025 for 9th grade?

He's very advanced in math and has already completed pre-calculus in 7th grade and is bilingual. I'm not trying to brag, but I want some recommendations for schools that are black-friendly but can also accommodate an advanced student.

Also, would public schools be fine? We are zoned for Jackson-Reed High School in our next home. Is that a good option for advanced black students? Our previous public school was a nightmare, because he was bullied by the other black kids for being too nerdy.

Would not recommend Jackson Reed in light of bullying concerns. St. Anselms might be good. Bright boys and inclusive.

If you move to VA, Thomas Jefferson is a wonderful magnet school for STEM kids and could accommodate his math level. If you definitely want private, I would consider GDS and Sidwell.
