Petty airplane complaint — get your knees out of my back

Anonymous
None of us know of this person was sitting weirdly or truly needed the space. If it was the former then that sucks. If it was the latter that still sucks but there’s nothing that can be done.

Maybe OP could have gone to the bathroom and if she saw the other pax was sitting weirdly she could asked tried explaining about her back surgery and asking politely. Of course maybe he had knee surgery or something…

I don't know why it's so hard to understand that you purchased ONE seat. Not the one you are sitting in and the one in front of you. What can be done if you don't fit in the seat you purchased is that you buy a different one with more legroom or you don't fly at all. It's really simple.

If I had a bad back I’d pay for economy plus seating. I’m shorter than that guy but have long legs and my knees touch, so I upgrade.

The person demanding a more comfortable seat gets to pay. You can’t demand a stranger buy a more expensive seat to accommodate you. That isn’t how the world works, even if you wish it did. You can be mad of course, but it won’t change anything.

My husband is 6’3 and almost always pay for extra legroom but sometimes it isn’t an option. And sometimes it’s prohibitively expensive. I’m sorry about your back but a 30 second conversation with the person sitting behind you or the flight attendant if you’d like to move will work a lot better than complaining on here. Also, keep in mind that the person squeezed into a seat with no room behind you isn’t comfortable either. When making a choice to fly we all choose to accept that it comes with annoyances and discomforts.

There's no 'all the way back'. 2 inches max.

I assure you to person with his knees rammed into your seat is more uncomfortable than you are OP. There is nothing you can do.

Of course, there is something you can do. You can have the flight attendant tell him to put his knees down and treat him like the toddler he is.

It's one thing to be generally uncomfortable and entirely different to willfully cause discomfort to others because you're so special.

I only put my knees in the seat when someone reclines. And then I do it with a vengeance.

And you think you sound smart saying this?

I really hate the phrase “touch grass” but it’s incredible to me you responded to the most gentle of possible suggestions with this level of assured self-centeredness.

The fact is we live in the world with other people and decent people recognize that other people’s needs deserve some consideration. Not that you always have to accommodate them but at least consider someone else might be worse off than you today and tomorrow it might be you.

Flight attendants are not going to do this. And there is no “down.” That is just where the knees are. Maybe not on a 5’9” person like in the OP. But on a 6’2”+ person? That is just where the knees are and no FA is going to say something about that. Any more than they are going to call out a fat person. Stay mad.

The best you can do is to ask the flight attendant if you can be moved. If the person’s knees were in the back of the seat my guess is they were taller than 5-9 and also that they have longer legs in general.

OP, I guess you have a special requirement (you had lower back surgery) just like a tall person has a special requirement (cannot control that their body takes up more space than provided in the seat). So if you want to 100 percent guarantee a comfortable experience, pay for a different seat.
