Still not in my Giant. Just checked an hour ago. Are you buying the $1 cans by Libby or something else? And if it's something else, is it significantly more expensive?
And yes, there was a shortage. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/06/01/AR2010060100801.html |
| I was at Harris Teeter on Tuesday and they were stocking the shelf with 3 cases of pumpkin. I was so happy to see that the shortage must be over. |
| At Giant yesterday (Rockville), they had canned pumpkin, but only the $2.99 organic version. Much as I LOVE me some pumpkin pie, that's a little pricey for me. |

Whole Foods and Trader Joe's have canned pumpkin all year round. They also carry canned butternut squash and sweet potato puree.
That said, you can use fresh pumpkin and make your own puree and freeze it, which is easier than canning. The hard part is cutting the pumpkin, which you have to cut in half. Be sure to buy cooking pumpkins, which are much smaller than your jack-o-lantern pumpkins. To make your own puree, split the pumpkin in half, scoop out seeds. Place cut side down into a baking dish and fill the dish with about 1/4 inch of water (this is the same method for cooking winter squash like acorn and butternut). Bake at 375 for about an hour or until tender when poked with a fork. Let it cool down, scoop out the pumpkin, puree in the blender and you're done. Put into ziploc bags or containers and freeze for up to 6months. Buying it canned is certainly easier and possibly cheaper (not sure since you get so much more when you DIY since you're using the whole pumpkin). But the taste of fresh pumpkin is a lot better, so you might want to give it a try if you're making a pumpkin dish for a special occasion. |
| I've checked the Teeter and Giant in my Alexandria neighborhood and they are starting to have canned pumpie pie filling in the baking aisle. Not the same as canned pumpkin. But, last night I found the organic canned pumpkin in the vegetable aisle where a few organic things are, price is $2.99 for 15 oz can. Yikes! |
| I heard on the news the other night a spokeswoman for Libbys saying there was a problem but they replanted and are back in the game, and the cans should be hitting the stores in full force starting next week. |

all the stores i checked didn't even have the organic kind. and there is no way i'm going on the hunt for the right breed of cooking pumpkin and doing all that processing.
what a crisis. |
| This is a funny thread. I'm not sure where all of you are looking, but I know for a fact you will find canned pumpkin (not pie filling) year round. I buy it at the grocery store. Not organic. There might have been a canned pumpkin shortage, but I cannot say it has impacted my ability to purchase and use pumpkin throughout the year. |
YUMMM... made a ton of miniature pumpkin breads this morning and pumpkin soup for lunch. My 5 year old loves it too

This is usually true but has not been true this year. We are in Bethesda and none of the Giants have had it, except for the expensive organic kind. |
this year in particular? as in, the past few months? where are you shopping? |
Wegmans, Harris Teeter, Giant and Whole Foods |
| Bought multiple cans tonight at Trader Joe's, pretty sure it was $1.99 a can -- organic. |

Big stacks of it in Target on Rte. 50. The plain old Libby's stuff.
