Does being in bargaining unit help in RIF?

But who would know if a bargaining unit-eligible employee is actually a member of a BU or if they are eligible? (I.e., will it look bad in any way if one joins the union today? Will that be taken as a sign that a person is part of the deep state?)

DW has the same question. Does it have any negative consequences if a fed (who has been eligible for years but did not join) joins the union now? Money is not an issue.

We've obviously never been here before, but no, I cannot of think of any negative consequences. I pay dues and I think all BUs should unless they really can't afford it.

+1. I pay about $17 a pay period. I had a period where every dollar mattered and I didn’t pay that year. Now I do again. No one has ever cared. No one would know unless they had access to my pay stub, which my supervisor should not. It’s super illegal to make personnel decisions based on whether you pay union dues. And while Trump will do the super illegal, someone would have to pull a list of everyone who pays dues and that’s easy to track and prove. Not that these folks are subtle. There is no point in targeting dues payers at an agency unless it’s to make every other Fed afraid to pay dues/ chill union participation. In which case I 100% promise the union will fight with everything they have.
