No?? In MCPS? |
While there are kids being advanced outside of school there are plenty of kids who are just naturally better at particular subjects and so advance more quickly. This isn’t a contest. It’s ES. |
It's true that kids should take classes at their level, and that they can take precalculus and calculus in college and still be an engineer. But Wheaton's engineering magnet starts Algebra 2 in 9th grade. They say you can do geometry over the summer, but that's if you get accepted in the first place. Your math class affects when you take biology and who your classmates are. I don't think we should force feed our kids, but yes, be aware of what those 3rd grade scores mean. Work with kids on homework to make sure they're really getting it, not just getting by. A little enrichment outside class is okay as long as we're not trying to create a math genius, just making sure our kids are reasonably working to their potential. |
| The highest your school will allow. Some allow Algebra, most don't. |
You think your a kid should go to algebra 1 from math 5?? |
Mine did |
| Algebra should be easy as math 5 or 6 or 7. Algebra covers various topics. Overall it should be fine to handle it. |
In MCPS? Your kid took math 5, not 5/6, and went straight to algebra? This seems like terrible advice for OP. |
Not really. Yes, if you can't get to algebra by 8th grade, your science options are limited. But if you are taking algebra in 9th, you aren't ready for bio/chem/physics yet. If you are super motivated, you can take extra electives later on those paths once the math is leveled up, but that's not of interest to people on that math track. If you take algebra in 7th, then you can take Chemistry + Biology in 9th, using an elective spot. But if you take algebra in 8th, you can double up in science in 10th or 11th if you want. Taking Algebra in 6th opens Physics in 9th, but that's just an option to take the courses in a different order. It's a non-issue. |
If your school hasn't publicly offered that path, email the school to ask for it. There's no rush to get placement, they can even move to algebra in September after 6th grade starts. |
AIM/7+ or Algebra if they are highly motivated. They can move classes after Fall MAP. |
It depends on the school. Regardless of math ours cannot do physics till 11th. |
It was math 5/6 compacted, but if the child is working at home, its fine. |
Then your kid is not like OP's. Her kid took math 5. |
|
I think the middle path is the right answer. Which I think is 6+. My oldest was on the line between top and middle paths, and we opted for 6+. So he took algebra in 8th and honors geometry in 9th, etc. he could have handled algebra in 7th grade but we instead opted for the path that would boost his confidence and not rush him.
His younger sibling takes grade level math, so is on pace to take algebra in 9th grade. |
