How to pronounce Liza?

Anonymous
I would say LIE-zuh but I know somebody who spells it that way and says LEE-suh. I'm afraid it's one of those names where your kid will have to correct people.

Why is then Lisa is pronounced as "Lee-sah"?
OP, those names sound like beautiful Russian names to me, Lena like in Elena and Liza like in Elizaveta, haha

OP here. Thank you! Our first was named after my Italian great grandmother but after the birth we found out it was also the name of my husband's two great grandmothers - one Russian and one Ukrainian! It was wild but also very cool to find out!

Obviously I know it will be my choice, just curious to hear people's thoughts.

There's only one way to pronounce it: LIE-za.

Your daughter would be correcting people for the rest of her life.

+1

Look up Leeza Gibbons, she's a moderately famous TV presenter.

Yes this.

Though as an Elizabeth this has always bothered me since it's not how you say the "liza" part of my own name. I've never used it as a nickname though, so.

To be fair, there is Bess and Betty as nicknames for Elizabeth, and they don’t even appear in that form in the name. I don’t think nicknames have to be pronounced exactly like the name they come from.

My parents named me a nickname of a name like Elizabeth/Catherine/Margaret. I’ve always wished that I had the original name so I had other nickname choices.

OP here. My first is named Lena. 50% of the time people get her name pronunciation right as "Lee-na" and others say "Len-a."

With both names, it it a matter of pronouncing a short or long vowel for the "e" and "i."

Again, just curious as to how people would pronounce Liza and if there was a "preferred" way, if there is such a thing 😅

Okay, naming your kids Lena and Liza is an awful idea. I say this as someone named Kathy with a brother Kevin, and cousins to Sima and Sara (who are sisters). The cutesy thing is awful. The alliteration is awful. Use your second choice.

OP doesn't have a kid named Lena so I'm not sure what your rant is about.

She sure does. Said so upthread. OP, I agree with most that there is only one way to pronounce Liza: LIE-zuh.

Also think Lena and Liza are super corny together.

Yes she does, read carefully. I don't mind alliteration at all but the matchy-matchy Lena and Liza thing goes way beyond that, not just that people will roll their eyes at it but to the point that people will constantly be mixing up which of the kids has which name.

Incorrrect; there are multiple ways.
The Liza I know pronounces it Lee-sah. Agree she will spend her life correcting people, no matter the intended pronunciation.

Maybe your friend just likes the name Lisa better- that would be a pretty unusual pronunciation of Liza. I mean, there’s a z, not an s, right there in the middle.

I'd pronounce it LIE-za and it would never occur to me it could be pronounced another way. Pretty name. I wanted to use Eliza but my DH vetoed.

OP here. Thanks for all the opinions on how the name is a bad choice given my other kid's name! I'm sure people had plenty of opinions on your own kids' names, too!

Sorry not sorry to disappoint!
