Adult Son First Law Job

So what.

I started at DOJ in the honors program right out of law school and made so little I needed a roommate. Best job I could have landed. Salary is not a proxy for how good a job may or may not be.

Do you know how attorneys law schools churn out every year?

All of us can understand a parent's worry about living costs in Boston or other HCOL areas so no need to shame them.

Still, it's not really her business. If he has to live frugally, that's fine.

Its not if parent decides didn't pay for their education or have to subsidize their lifestyle due to their low income but for parents who support their kids, its only natural to worry.

Then don’t pay for your adult kids with JDs.

OP, why don't you call your son's new employer and ask for a raise.

If you paid for law school, it's not a good ROI. But if he's happy that's worth gold.

My husband got paid around 60k right out of law school as a prosecutor. Best training and stepping stone he could have had. Now makes 175k as an attorney for a government agency. Calm down.

Was that 20 years ago?

Unless he graduated from a top law school or at the very top of a mid-tier law school, that sounds about right.

$90k is pretty good. With income-based repayment options for any loans and no dependents, he'll be able to meet all his needs and most of his wants, while saving some money for retirement and other goals. I remember my parents had three goals for their kids: not in jail, not asking for money, with health insurance. It sounds like your kid has hit all three so congrats! You don't have to worry and can enjoy the fact that your kid is done with school and gainfully employed. The rest is up to him.

It's not low at all. Average attorney salaries--all years of experience--is around 170k.

You need to get a grip.

I know full well if I went to law school, I would be lucky to make 100k out of the gate. Exh makes 190k with 25 years of experience.

I am not that poster but that should be now--not 20 years ago. 175k TODAY is about what most government attorneys make.

Were you under the impression that all lawyers make a ton of money? They don't.

He will probably be eligible for a year end bonus, and salary should go up each year. It's a great start, OP. I have my own small law firm and it's the salary I offer to first year associates.
