How does one become super functional?

That what thought too.

A overtly self focused, self disciplined 25 yo needs to not be too controlling at home, with a spouse or with kids.

There actually is a thing called the 5am club.

But yeah, people who are a wreck can become like this when motivation aligns with environment. I was a wreck until I got to law school, which I loved, and became extremely disciplined. I really enjoyed changing. And I've been pretty together ever since. Early mornings are great -- no one else is up. No one is demanding anything of you yet. You have to go to bed early though.

Two workouts a day is a lot…

I am highly efficient because I am deeply lazy: I "eat my frogs" which takes a few hours (including work) so I can then nap and chill.

I have a colleague like this. She has two young kids and seems to be genuinely thriving, not burning the candle at both ends and on a crash course to burnout like some "have it all" types. She has said explicitly that this is her secret - she doesn't take time to (over)think or weigh options, she acts, gets it done, and moves on to the next thing. But ultimately you just have to be wired that way - if you aren't born with it, you can't force it. At least not sustainably...

I know people like this. The dirty little secret is they leave a lot of messes for the rest of us to clean up. I could get a lot more done if I didn't care if it was done well or correctly.

You have no idea what his insides are like. Don’t compare your inside to someone’s outside.

He may be very good at things but unless you know what’s holding it together, don’t envy him. It could be abusive hypercritical parents and internal thinking, it could be being raised in a very controlling environment and he spirals if he’s not in a rigid structure or something goes wrong, it could be intense anxiety and he has to stay busy or else he falls apart. Wait til he’s 40, then you’ll know.

I understand how you envy some parts OP, but that’s a crazy way to waste his youth. Hopefully for his sake there’s more fun you’re not hearing about since it’s a work convo.

I'm very disciplined--I always have been. I plan ahead, I'm efficient with my time, make decisions quickly, etc.

I'm not riddled with anxiety or a bad parent or a selfish spouse. The responders here are making some huge leaps LOL

I know a few young people like this as well, and they usually have to go to bed by about 9pm to sustain this lifestyle. Which isn't bad, but they usually have a very limited social life and almost no flexibility.

That's you. OP didn't describe you. The person op described, scares me. I see red flags.
